Impaktor triggered by piezo tuning clip. Fun!
After reading this wonderful article by Matthew Davidson: https://cycling74.com/practical-max/practical-max-1/#.Vt3lZuZyy5I I ordered the piezo tuning clip and I tried for fun with impaktor. Works awesome!
I only took the high-cut filter off in the settings and that's it cuz it wouldn't pick up smaller hits. The piezo clip is connected to the iconnectivity iconnectaudio and fed into impaktor. Anybody who wants to try it out, I ordered it off ebay. http://www.musiciansfriend.com/accessories/daddario-planet-waves-pw-ptc-01-piezo-tuning-clip
The advantage is that it doesn't pick up sounds from the room too much and you can clip it anywhere.

I got it so I can trigger Impaktor with my Roland Octapad, and it's really fun. That way I can actually sequence Impaktor via-MIDI. One sound at a time, record the MIDI into my MPC, MPC triggers the Octapad which is sending a sound output that triggers Impaktor. There's some latency involved but I just sample the results.
It's definitely a long-way-around approach, but fun!
Cool! I just put the clip on the table and playing with my hands or drumsticks. This is great. I also have max 7 so the patch uploaded by Matthew Davidson is great also.
One of the very first things I did when I started using iOS for music was buy a practice pad and some velcro, so I could attach my phone to the practice pad, and play the practice pad with drumsticks to trigger Impaktor. This works well, btw
nice trick! I have a korg wavedrum oriental so it's kind of similar with piezos. Pretty expressive piece of gear! Now if Impaktor could send midi out information to other apps with various parameters.
Lack of MIDI was the exact reason I passed on the WaveDrum (and wound up going for the Roland, instead). I'm still baffled why Korg made that decision. I've heard the same about the WaveDrum though, that it's super expressive. The Octapad I use has the same triggers from the V-Drums, and I can attest they're very, very responsive. Octapad's expensive though
You are right about the lack of midi but also no way to store patches. Which octopad do you have? I have an spd-sx and an old pad-8.
I have a cookie tin with a piezo inside that works great with Impaktor. But, I've found the easiest is to use a drum pad I pulled off a cheap Simmons ekit and plug it in via 1/4" and drive Impaktor. The rubber pad isn't as wild and wooly as the cookie tin w/ piezo. @supadom turned me on to the edrum solution; he's a pro at all this.
Roland Octapad SPD-30, the newest non-sampling one.
A bit OT from the thread but 2 things that's cool about the octopad you have is that you have an HH controller and you can transpose samples. The spd-sx has no hh controller and the only way to transpose samples is to pitchshift using resampling. Roland completely botched that royally. Sorry I had to rant. Back on topic!
Wow really no HH on the SPD-SX? They did drop the ball on that. I use the HH and BD pedal inputs on mine!
hehe as far as the transpose goes...blush I don't use any internal sounds on the Octapad, literally only used it as a MIDI Controller (or using the sounds to trigger Impaktor). It's a dream come true having that thing as a MIDI Controller, though!
Luckily I have a 2box drumit5
@ paradiddle ...
Do you think Impaktor using this clip is less likely to be triggered by external sounds than a radio shack type piezo setup ?
I find my homemade solutions are fine at home , but on stage the amps and or drum kit false trigger like crazy.
I guess the same question could be asked of a drum pad from an old kit vs a homemade trigger .
Hi Jes, i don't think so. It picks up vibration so any impact will trigger it (It picks up my fingersnap in the air but lightly). The clip is nice cuz you can clip on stuff and it stays there. On e-drums, the piezo is inside the drum so less chance of triggering it. Mind you, I have a few old simmons drumkit and the pads would crosstalk sometimes.
@Jes I find the epad route is by a mile the best solution in a loud stage environment. It does retrigger very slightly but it is barely noticeable. I regularly play with a drummer and never had any problems to speak of.
Other than retriggeing I also find it hard to securely fix the piezo to whatever you're fixing it to. Also the cables in them tend to be crackly ones which again causes triggering.
Epads being rubber, don't transfer vibrations as much therefore the piezo within is much better isolated. Rubber is also great to play on, weather with sticks or hands.
Cheers @lukesleepwalker I'm the impaktor ninja got to drop some footage soon. I'm putting a new project together.
@paradiddle @supadom
Thanks for your responses.. My mate has just bought an old Yamaha e kit so I will test it with a pad from that ..apart from making my own Tupperware pads with synthetic rubber type stuff glued to top , I've also been attaching a piezo to the inside skin of my djembe with Velcro. This works surprisingly well and has the added advantage of being able to mic the djembes actual sound as well.
I also have a wave drum..hmmm I haven't thought about it before..one of the audio outputs could trigger Impaktor...have you tried this @paradiddle ? If so, does it work cleanly ?
Hi Jes, no I haven't tried this. I doubt it'll work great though. You're better off with a piezo/e-drumpad or so. The clip i got is awesome. I can really trigger impaktor with lots of dynamics. The max/msp patch I have also is awesome. I can use it to trigger the onboard synths, samples or even send midi out to anything on my pc. The nice thing is that I can modify the patch anyway I want.
When attaching a piezo to a resonant object retrigering will always occur (on stage) as other sounds will make that surface vibrate.
I also have a wavedrum but it is collecting dust. I'm much more into organic sounds coming from organic sources and for digi sounds there's impaktor!
Yeah I don't use mine much either..but I intend to run it through Flux or Turnado for some serious sonic mayhem...it is such a pity they didn't make it a midi trigger also...
I use the wavedrum plenty but I also have a nice yamaha recording custom which I bough in 1989. I use anything which makes sound. Acoustic, electronic. No limits.
