Dusty Strings D550 Hammered Dulcimer now with Audiobus and IAA

Hi y'all!

I've reinstated the Dusty Strings D550 Hammered Dulcimer app update that included Audiobus and IAA support. Had a false alarm there that made me pull the app for half a day.

Cheers and thanks,

  • Does it support MIDI-in, so it can be controlled by a DAW MIDI keyboard or piano roll?

  • P.S..: I asked just out of curiosity. I already bought it. For the price, it's a steal, as with your bundles which I also bought.

    Hi theconnactic.

No, it can't be controlled via MIDI.

If you want a MIDI controlled Hammered Dulcimer, use the free Hammered Dulcimer instrument in ThumbJam. It's the same samples as my Trapezoid app, Jesse let me use his samples for my app.

The D550 is a completely different beast, really an amazing instrument both in its real and virtual form.

I don't do any MIDI controlled instruments. I do, however, give most of my samples to Jesse to give away as free instruments in ThumbJam. Unfortunately, I don't have that as an option for the D550 due to contractual obligations.

  • Drat, I've had to pull this app from the store and back out the Audiobus features. It was just having too many issues on the oldest model iPads. I was afraid of this, but now that I've had a chance to try it on iOS 9 running on an iPad 2, I have to do this. It was already pushing the limits of those devices.

Talking with Jesse Chappell, it looks like after I get an update out there that restores baseline functionality for the older iPads, I can do a build that is limited to 64-bit devices that will restrict the Audiobus/IAA features to more modern devices. Thanks Jesse for the information!

OK, on further testing, it appears I misunderstood the issue my customer was having in the field. I spent a bunch of time with the app on an iPad 2 running iOS 9 and other than being slow to launch (that was the same before the Audiobus intergration, it has to load 100 MB+ of samples), its behaving itself.

I've reinstated the app update to the iTunes App Store and gone live in the Audiobus portal.

    Sorry for the drama!

    Michael

  • Hi, @Seisiuneer! Thank you for another intriguing app. Do you plan someday in the future to implement different velocity layers for this one (and the also for the traditional irish apps, hopefully)?

  • edited March 2016

Sorry, forget the question, please. Playing now with the app, I realize it's completely impractical to do so, unless you rely on what cannot be relied upon, iPad's accelerometer.

  • Believe me, if I could reliably do velocity detect, I would. None of the accelerometer based schemes are reliable, and believe it or not, Apple actually has a patent on it:

  • Since everyone should have a hammered dulcimer for St. Patrick's Day, my "Dusty Strings D550 Chromatic Hammered Dulcimer" iPad app is on sale for only $0.99 today, Mar 16 (so you can practice) and on St. Patrick's Day! Back to $4.99 on the 18th.

  • These are some great deals on your apps man! I already got em all, which was still a great deal for me. This one is extremely fun and easy to play.

  • Just wanted to say I've been looking for a good hammered dulcimer app for quite a while and THIS IS IT! Sounds lovely and is also really cool running it through ToneStack via AUM. Noticed you have a lot of other interesting apps out there, and I know someone who might be very interested, so will pass it along. Thanks!
