Transfer audio with Apple Lightning SD card reader?
I'm sure this has been discussed before, but I couldn't find anything via forum search.
Currently, if I have recorded audio from my portable recorder, and want to get it into my iPad or iPhone... I put the SD card I recorded onto into an AirStash SDcard wifi unit. That works great and I can import/export audio/video/photos/docs each way.
But, for large video or hires photo files, I usually just use my Lightning SD card reader since it's faster than transferring via wifi and doesn't require power.
I thought that in a pinch I could just as easily transfer audio files vis the Lightning SD card reader too, but it appears to ONLY support photos and video. Is that right?
If so, is there a work-around or app that gives you import/export access to files on an SD card via Apple's Lightning SD card reader? Or, at least import since it looks like it's only designed to work one way.
The only file sharing app I have is Air Sharing, but it only works via wifi.

This must be a dumb question.
Seems that if iOS supports 2way import/export from a 3rd party wifi SD card device, it'd surely support at least import from their pricey lighting SD card reader. But, the more I search this... it appears that it isn't possible. At least not with Apple's Lightning SD card reader.
If the Lightning SD card is capable of importing photos & video, it's got to be a conscious decision to restrict audio files from being imported. I wonder why? So lame.
I believe I have heard that if you put the files in a folder named DCIM it could work. Never tried it though.
It seems like I somehow got it to work a long time ago when I was monkeying around. That might have been what I did. I thought maybe I'd changed the filenames to read .mov instead, but will try the DCIM method first.
I've never had to use the Lightning connector for audio because I just use the Airstash2 instead.
The only reason I'm trying out a faster way is that I'm finding a few little noise apps that are cool, but don't have AB or haven't been updated to AB2. So, I figured I'd try just running a stereo mini out of the headphone jack into the line-in of my Sony PCMM10, record a session with the noise toys there, then just transfer them back over. A pain I know, but it doesn't look like some of these apps are ever going to get updated or AB2 fixed, like Dr OM & Noisemusick.
FYI: Tried moving audio files into a folder named DCIM and I can now see the folder via lightning SD card reader, but no files show up. Tried changing the .MP3 file names to both .MOV & .MP4 and that didn't work.
Apple opened up the lightening connector for USB audio/midi plus the direct connect flash drives for audio, video, midi, docs, etc, alas SD cards AFAIK are still restricted to camera roll duties only. I hope they open it up someday...but I'm doubtful of that.
@Toz what would be an example of a direct connect flash drive?
@o_imseng -- The iXpand drive from SanDisk is what I have (32GB version). The SanDisk free apps are not great but they work. Mostly I use AudioShare to move files back and forth. Cubasis has added direct support for external drives but that just gave the ability to save their CBP files, otherwise, almost everything with "Open In" will work (open in the SanDisk app).
IF you are use Auria Pro, you should be able to save to any connected storage system via said system's corresponding app, for example one of the Kingston or RAVPower wireless storage systems, which are pretty cheap (around 35-45 bucks). Some of these have SD card readers in addition to USB storage. But I can't say from personal experience, and there's no definitive answer on the Auria forum:

I would love to hear a "yeah, it definitely works," for SD cards myself, as that would be my preferred way to archive Auria projects and clear up space on the iPad. So far, it's stuck in "should work, in theory," based on Rim's own statements. If your storage device has an app, Auria will use the "Open In ..." function to access it and allow for import/export.
That's if you use Auria Pro. In theory. I think.
@TozBourne That iXpand looks cool, especially with a builtin lightning plug... but that doesn't help me with media on SD cards, like I record with my little Sony PCMM10. Though, your solution I bet is fast and could be of benefit for 4k video storage that I might want to edit on the iPad instead of taking up all my available space.
@eustressor Actually, I HAVE a solution that works fine. I'm using the AirStash2 wifi portable USB thingy. It uses swappable SD cards. Though the RAVPower one that was recommended to me on another thread looks even better since it also serves as a spare battery.
I was just trying to see if I could use my Lightning SD card reader for audio as well as photos/video. But it looks like Apple hasn't opened up that port for anything other than camera roll. I thought maybe since they made the Lightning SD card reader open for use with iPhones instead of strictly iPads recently with iOS9.? that maybe they'd allowed/granted us lowly users better access to our file system storage. I guess I was wrong. Doesn't work.
Good point; the SanDisk USB Wireless flashdrive has a Micro-SD card (not the normal size that my camera uses) and works similar to the iXpand Lightening drive with its own app, but still...it's wireless.
@TozBourne Are you sure the SanDisk USB wireless has a micro-sd slot? I think their current one is basically what replaced the AirStash2 and the new one doesn't have an SD slot anymore.
@skiphunt -- Funny, I just answered this (and other) questions in a short video that I made. I just posted here at AB forum with the link.
Watched your video Yeah, that one you're using had a microSD slot. My Airstash2 has a regular microSD but my storage from the Sony PCMM10 is microSD.
What I was getting at is that I think that wireless Sandisk you're using has been discontinued like my AirStash2 has. The AirStash was bought out by Maxell 2-3 years ago... but now the AirStash site lists the next version of the product is the SanDisk one. Only it's the copper color looking one and it does NOT have SD or microSD slots anymore. I see that the model you have is still being sold on Amazon though, but no longer listed on the Sandisk product site.
When the time comes, I'll likely get one of those RAVPower drives since they also serve as a spare battery, accept SD cards, can accept a portable HDD and make it wireless too, etc.
