[Video] iOS external storage demo

Howdy, I put up a YouTube video that demos a couple of external storage solutions for our iDevices. The recent discussions prompted me to finally do a video since it is something I thought about doing a while back.

By no means is this all encompassing, but I do show what I use...an iXpand drive and a Wirleless Flashdrive, both made by SanDisk. I have no affiliation with them (or anyone really), I just thought this might help some folks.

  • Thanks that was helpful :)

Indeed it was, I'm thinking about getting one of these (the iXpand) and trawling through Amazon reviews to suss out whether it will work with audio files was a pain :)

  • That was helpful. What iOS apps need is a way to save their files to external storage such as this. With Caustic I use its FTP server and can load and save all of its files to external storage (I use Dropbox) but all of the apps don't do this. I'd like to be able to save presets, projects etc to external storage but it looks like it has to be implemented by the dev of the app. It would be nice, for instance, to save iSpark projects and samples to external storage so I don't have to use so much of my iPads onboard storage. That way I would have more room for new apps that I'll never use but really need!

    Thanks TozBourne!

  • Nice. Thanks for this.

I certainly share your dreams of having apps like iSpark being able to run projects (including streaming samples) directly from external storage. I guess that's a calculated Apple restriction, at present, if ever there was one. But are you saying that Caustic's FTP server somehow allows some aspects of that function with Caustic. Or (and I think this is what you're getting at) that the FTP server in Caustic just makes it more convenient to backup files to other locations? That is, it wouldn't actually reduce manual file copying of Caustic files from and back to iDevice, in a bid to save on precious onboard storage space. It justs makes that manual file backing up, or shuttlling to and fro, easier to do. Is that right?

    Thanks

Yes - while still having convenient access to those files.

A way to plug external storage into iPad would be nice but the way I use Caustic FTP saves keeping a half GB or more onboard but still with pretty quick and easy to access.

If you could stream from directly connected storage that would be nice and it wouldn't have to be too big physically. That way it wouldn't defeat the portability of using the iPad.
