Panic Button

Can someone explain this to me? I see this feature on midi devices all of the time but I'm embarrassed to admit that I have no clue what it does? :#

  • It releases stuck MIDI notes... most of the time!

    Good to know-Thanks!

  • I needed that.

  • Specifically, it generally sends an "All Notes Off" MIDI message everywhere it can. In the case of a synth, that might be to itself. On a controller, that might be down all channels of all connected ports.

  • I prefer a Don't Panic button, but they're rare.

  • I wish there was an equivalent to this for the very annoying audio error sound that sometimes occurs when an app (usually in AB) reports an error condition.

For my sins I have gone into this routine a couple of times (in supermarket parking lots, at baseball stadiums, while watching fireworks on July 4th) only ever to be met with puzzled -if not pitying- faces. Same reaction in a business meeting in New York City when answered a particularly poor marketing suggestion with my best Mainwaring '...stupid boy...'. Very hard to explain Pike in American...

  • I want to put my oar in the water here in case anyone is still following this thread...

I purchased Stephane Martin's MIDI Panic because I was getting frustrated with not finding Panic buttons when I need them. StepPolyArp is great. I love it. But depending on when you interrupt or unlatch the arpeggiator, it can leave stuck notes. I had this happen again this morning and decided to plunk down the measly price for MIDI Panic. It worked. I'm satisfied. I'm going to make sure it's launched before I do anything worthwhile in the way of mixes from now on.
