Import AudioShare files directly into any iCloud-Supported App
Two scoops of whaaaaaaaat??? Maybe I'm the last person to hear about this, but I'm doing some research for an upcoming app demonstration and happened to learn, on a tangent, that AudioShare is what's called an "iCloud-supported location," which means that the iCloud-import functionality built into any app can act as a bridge to your AudioShare files.
When you're importing files into your apps through iCloud, you'll be prompted with a standard dialog: a file-manager like window that shows your iCloud directories and files, available for import. In the upper left-hand corner of that dialog, however, is a button labeled "Locations," and touching this will drop-down a list of iCloud-supported locations other than your iCloud directories, including Dropbox, Google Drive, and #$%^ing AudioShare are you kidding me. Touching 'AudioShare' will open up your AudioShare directories right in that same dialog, and you can select any of your files from AudioShare for import into whatever app you opened the iCloud dialog from.
I... I mean, I assume that this would work for export as well; I assume that, when you're choosing an iCloud directory to export a file to, you could pick AudioShare as a location. [EDIT] Just tested this, and, yes, export works exactly the same way. You get to pick the AudioShare directory to export to and everything, and, unlike General Pasteboard, the filename and meta of whatever sample you're exporting is saved. Un-#$%^ing-believable.
Why did no one tell me about this? This changes everything. For one thing, it makes me look at iCloud completely differently as a platform; it just leveled up, in my opinion, to functionality many times beyond what I'd been giving it credit for.
Did you all know about this?

Yepp, there is a reason why I've been pushing developers to implement iOS-FilePicker/Fileprovider support.
Many apps hide the iOS-FilePicker behind 'iCloud Drive' or 'Document Picker' or any abreviation imaginable
There is no need to even have iCloud Drive enabled to use it, some apps do hide the iCloud Drive features if iCloud Drive is not enabled on system-level(GarageBand does this).
I'm happy people 'wake up' to see the benefits of iCloudDrive/iOS-FilePicker, it's been available since iOS8 but implementation has been everything but fast
Maybe it will take posts like this to push iCloud Drive (iOS-FilePicker/File-Provider) implementation forward?
My wish for 2016 is that every single music-app during this year will add support for import & export using iOS-FilePicker so we can finally start to properly manage our files
I was aware that, for instance, AudioShare has an SDK that allows direct access to its directories, but you're right; for the sake of standardization, the best thing for every app to do would be to implement iCloud import and to register themselves as "iCloud support locations" so that OTHER apps with iCloud import could have direct access to their files. This is practically what you'd call a step away from the document sandboxing issues which have plagued iOS forever. Wow.
There is really no need for every app to be in the 'Locations' menu (even though it would be nice!).
For starters it would be enough that the apps support the 'Document Picker/iOS-FilePicker/iCloudDrive' making it possible to import & export files to and from a 'FileManager' of our choice.
There are quite a few apps that act as 'FileProviders(ie. selectable from the iCloudDrive 'Location' menu), Documents 5, AudioShare, Google Drive, Drop Box to name a few and my Favourite (FileHub) will get provider support soon too.
The only 'downside' of adding iOS-FileProvider support is that the documents would no longer be available to 'iTunes File Sharing' which might be a good thing too
This is why I hope Apple will improve the File-Provider in iOS10 and make every single apps 'Documents' folder available to the DocumentPicker. This would still make it possible to manage files using iTunes and also make it easier for apps to access each others documents/files.
Time will tell what happens, but for me it only makes sense to use and support the functions provided by iOS.
Think about it, imagine if the 'AudioCopy SDK' had an option to 'Copy' the exported file to a 'iCloud Drive Location' and also 'Paste' from an 'iCloud Drive Location' voila, no need to have AudioCopy.app installed at all.
I hate iTunes File Sharing, haha, because I run Linux -- no iTunes support. I agree with you completely, and I'm excited to finally have discovered this. The document sandboxing is one of the few things that I really, really hate about iOS. Really, it's probably only that and the inability to back-up and restore individual apps in a standardized fashion (I hate losing settings, documents, and purchases for each app when I delete them to conserve space, although the best apps implement workarounds for these problems in their own ways). Finally coming to understand this 'document picker' feature makes me feel like Apple has actually warmed up to providing a system-standard means of moving files back and forth between apps, which is just awesome.
I've been trying to humbly push developers to implement support for iOS-FilePicker since it was released together with iOS8. I'm happy that AudioShare supports iOS-FileProvider too and wish more apps would follow and at least add support for the iOS-FilePicker allowing us to easily access our own content.
If I was a developer it would be a 'no-brainer' to do import/export using standard iOS features such as 'Open In...' & 'iCloud Drive/Document Picker'.
The good thing for the developers would be that there would be no need to depend on a 3rd party library that might break with system-updates and things like that.
The inclusion of 'iCloud Drive' features does require iOS8+. But hey it's soon time for iOS10 anyway
Thanks. I had no idea!
This is really useful. I COMPLETELY understand your outrage
Slightly OT but
Takete 1.5 just implemented the icloud feature and one of the 'locations' for me is FileBrowser which gives me access to my NAS. Wow! Direct access from the app to all my locally stored videos. This is a game changer for me as I only have 16 gig ipad mini2. Any videos I dont need I can quickly offload to the NAS. I imagine people with large sample libraries could do the same.
Actually, it has nothing to do with iCloud. iCloud Drive is just one of the possible "locations", one that is built-in to iOS. The right name for this technology would be "Document Picker", and it's very simple to setup. There's really no reason any app that needs import/export of any kind of file wouldn't implement it.
This is what puzzles me. It seems like a 'no-brainer' but still many developer somehow refuse to implement it.
Another feature that should be quite easy to implement is the 'Open In...'/'Share Sheet' and even that seems to be pretty much forgotten.
I can understand the unwillingness to implement a 'Document Provider' for the content they supply but for Import & Export of user content it should be pretty much standard for all apps.
I mean imagine if AudioCopy SDK had an option to use Document Picker and Share-Sheet(Open In...) for all operations, that would make it way easier to quickly send a file to another app without having to store the file in AudioCopy.app or some hidden folder on iOS thats unreachable for housekeeping.
I hope iOS10 will bring an end to the dreaded 'iTunes File Sharing' folders. Either that or Apple antes up and updates the iCloud Drive.app and allows it to access all the 'Documents'(iTunes File Sharing) on the device using one standard interface like the Document Picker...
