looking for suggestions

I'm new to the ipad world and loving it but there is still so much to learn. I have a Griffin Smart connect and it got a short in it so im now in the market for a new interface. Looking for suggestions. I will be using auria for recordings bias for recording my guitar and still trying to find what to use for drums. I have a single monitor that I also use. Can you recommend an interface? I looked at some of the interfaces but they dont all have outs for my monitor. I'm thinking either focusrite isolo, apogee jam 96k or irig hd. for my needs which would you suggest? can you suggest a drum app for rock music for a guitar player?

Check out Rock Drum Machine for a simple but good drum app. There's a free version to test it out as well.

  • I have the iRig Pro, which is nice because you can take the guitar jack, a powered mic, or a midi input. It sounds great, simple to use, and is versatile because of the above.

Seangarland assumes you're looking for a drum app, and if you are, fine. If you're looking for an interface for recording live acoustic drums, then you need something with a lot more inputs, if you're recording with multiple microphones. If you're recording from a drum pad set, then you'll have to look at what comes out of it, but they all tend to output midi on the same channel, and you'll need something like Midiflow to split the signal into different channels in Auria.

But if you're looking for a drum app, you'll get 8 million answers. I use an Alesis Percpad because I like to actually hit things. Not well, but it provides a certain level of satisfaction.

  • As for an interface, I am in love with my Yamaha AG06; I'm convinced that there isn't a more kick-ass interface out there, and it has plenty of inputs for recording drums (if that's what you want to do), although some of them may require additional amplification. Or, if you're just going to use software for drums, you can save some money by buying the AG03, which has fewer inputs.

It isn't the most portable interface in the world, but it has very deep controls, lots of inputs, can be powered on a separate USB port (great for iOS), and, as if that wasn't enough, it has a 'loopback' feature, which will send its output directly to its input without needing to use cables -- which is great for recording apps that don't support IAA or AudioBus IN IAA or AudioBus.

Also, it can be used as a mixer without even needing to be attached to a computer / iPad, so, yeah... it's a pretty big deal. Its size is very reasonable for what it is, but, if you're looking for something that you can carry in your pocket, there are other interfaces out there more aimed at guitarists -- and even if you want to put it in your bag, you might need a case for it, because of all of the knobs and buttons. For moving it around your house, though, it's very petite, and mine has a permanent home on my desk, which suits it well.

    Welcome to iOS, man.

  • Update: I just ordered the Focusrite isolo Dock. Now i'm on to search for midi controller

  • One more thing....I play rock/metal and i'm looking for a good keyboard app that has a wide range of sounds, most i have seem are for electronic music...any suggestions for an app for keys thats isnt so geared for electronic music? I dig the sounds in garage band but i'm staying with auria, also any good apps for a sampler? your suggestions are apppreciated

  • How wide? Which kind of sounds? Vintage stuff like Rhodes, Wurlitzer and Hammond tones? Prog Rock sounds a la rudess?

Anyway ThumbJam all the way, or korg module.

  • Auria's built-in sample player might fit the bill, it's called Lyra and comes with a a fair few instruments, and you can add your own in sf2, SFZ, and EXS. Otherwise you might want to have a look at SampleTank.

  • Bismark BS-16i

If you are using Auria Pro with Lyra built in, I'm not sure if BS-16i adds anything? Korg Module and iM1 are great for standard keys sounds, and Galileo is awesome for organ sounds.
