Fugue Machine transposed by Adults

I’ve done it and I’m not doing any more!

This is Fugue Machine, running a fairly simple riff, over and over. However, as you can see, as I add each playhead, they transpose each other, until all four are running, at which point they should all be transposing.

The transposition is happening in Adults, which is accepting all four midi channels (1,2,3,4) from Fugue Machine, and triggering a little mini mono synth each channel. The thing is, though, none of the synths are directly driven from the Fugue Machine note value outputs — each channel is transposed using a little transposer module I made with two inputs and an output. Inside, it’s taking input X, subtracting “middle C” from it, then adding that to input Y, then out it goes. The transpositions driving the four mini synths are A+B+C; A+B+D; A+C+D; B+C+D which, I think, covers all second order combinations.

I typed it correctly, what happens after that is not my responsibility and should not require further maintenance effort. I performed my activity according to specification, I would propose that the consumption of my effort is in breach of my terms.

Is it just me? When I try playing these videos from within this forum page, it is (not always) actually crashing my MacBookPro to the point of involuntarily causing a full restart. At the very least, it’s dragging the system down and ramping the fan up to the point that the page is unnavigable and won’t redraw upon scroll (always). Might be just my Mac, or my Safari, or my Youtube videos of this (which are captured from the iPad 2 via 30-pin Apple HDMI adaptor to an Elgato 60HD that is set to crop to iPad screen size, which it does nicely).

  • No problem here, on PC not Macbook though, so youtube side is probs ok.

  • You have to admit it's a bit amusing that you spend the better part of a week finding a way to bend these apps to your will, but cannot take the few seconds necessary to update your device's spellcheck dictionary. If I didn't know better, I would think you liked to expose the chaos within order.

You won't like him when he's angry Doctor...

  • @JohnnyGoodyear I like him best when he's angry. Now you, on the other hand... I wouldn't care to see that.

There’s boundaries of agency and expectation.

Expectation mismatches and lack of agency can cause depression, anger, mental instability and one day just chucking it all in. After all, most of life is simply frustration that stuff you want to have happen doesn’t or didn’t happen. Other stuff by other people happens, but your stuff doesn’t.

Agency — by which I mean the effect I have on the outside world (outside of me) (by which I mean the other) — is fundamental to the illusion of existence. I can only know I exist because of the effect I have. If the effect of my self is stifled or frustrated, this interprets as not happy.

As you can see, there’s boundaries and delimitations between acts I produce and expected effects of my own actions. Effects I expect to happen should happen, but unexpected intervention or occlusion by the other adds up to just more of the usual (in other words, “shit happens”).

  • Clarified butter is still slippery, but I love it. Dig the videos, too, btw.

    Last Tango in Paris?

  • I’ve put a drum beat on the latest one I’ve been working on today, using Seek Beats and link and AUM, all running at the same time as Adults and Fugue Machine too! Most of the attempts today consisted of recording it as various apps would disappear and come in anew, one after the next. This is a recording where nothing untoward happened and everything stayed up (except immediately before I hit record, whereupon the iPad yet again blanked then displayed the apple).

This represents a more apparent demonstration of what I mean by having fugue machine able to transpose the outputs. The sequence is dead simple, only three different notes arranged in motifs over four bars, so you can see how each track transposes others.

  • This thread is too Adults for me.
