Luckily enough there isn't just pop
Hmm, an interesting video, explains why I hate current pop music so much! And how do we spend our time, knowing nobody gives us a damn?
I spend mine doing my own thing mostly , also listening to others doing theirs. ( when I am not too busy with life I should add).
Is your thread title deliberately taken from an Alan Parsons Project song, or is it pure coincidence?!
that guy is a complete tool
pop music is written to appeal to as many people as possible? what a scintillating observation! noone can possibly just like pop music, they had to be brainwashed into liking it, because it's apparently impossible to just like something.
and the comments bring us full circle with "Want to get away from pop music?
Try classical, classic rock, metal, rock, folk, bluegrass or anything but rap, hip hop and the like."
ah yes, the good ol' "everything except rap and country."
are these the type of people that believe that not listening to pop music somehow makes them smarter or indicates better taste? the ones who say stuff like "i was born in the wrong decade, there's no good music anymore"
i don't mean any offense to the OP, i just hear ppl say this kind of stuff somewhat often and it's rather irritating to me. music doesn't have to be super-smart all of the time, and i personally don't think it should.
indeed. Wondered if anyone would catch on to that.
I thought it must have been - great song!
One thing people keep forgetting:
pop music(and pop culture) is and has always been the state of art of music technology
which is the exact opposite of being pioneering. Is the summa of already successful techniques(together with fund raising, marketing, advertising and selling skills), combined in a studied way, that grants the success pop products have.
"Games People Play" was my entry point to the Alan Parsons Project, so I got the reference straight away! Not exactly a "hip" group but I have every album and enjoy it as much now as 30 years ago...
ion! noone can possibly just like pop music, they had to be brainwashed into liking it, because it's apparently impossible to just like
uld.
these guys would beg to differ ...
This. Yes.
Exactly. I used to be the biggest music snob. Now, I think two things:
If someone wants to "compress the shit out of everything" like one of my friends, and other people want to listen to it, so what?
Yes, I wish for people to have more meaningful interactions with music. But if they like drivel, and they're happy, I'm grateful that music touches them so easily.
All music has to do is appeal to the listener on some emotional level. That's it. For whatever reason.
And there was just as much drivel recorded in 60s, 70s, 80s, etc., as there is now. It's just that what was playing in our youth, was emotionally appealing to us at the time.
I'd love it if more people listened to my stuff. I don't expect them to. I think more people should listen to classical music. I don't expect them to. The onething that would disturb me would be people not listening to music at all.
^ Bam. and +1 for most of @blanksmaiden said.
If this guy thinks that Stax and Motown and Atlantic and Chess weren't A) regurgitating their own tunes and swiping off each other, he need only listen to one of the box sets.
I mean, I love a funny/angry rant as much as the next guy (and laughed/cried at several points in this one) but c'mon: this same stuff was being said in 1966, 76, 86, 96, 2006 and again in 2106. Hell, the Zappa interview halfway through, which he used to back up his point, is from at least 20 years ago!
Like the "Where's today's Bowie?" thread, this is like your grandfather grunting that "they just don't make 'em like Bing Crosby anymore!"
MAN! When I as a kid listening to pop radio (early 80s) we had BRILLIANT, lyrically advanced music on the radio all the time! "The Reflex is the lonely child, it's waiting by the park" and "Karma karma karma karma karma karma Chameleon, you come and go, you come and go" and "Oh mickey, you're so fine you blow my mind" and, "Tonight we're going to party like it's 1999!" and "Don't you want me baby" and "Our house, in the middle of our street" and "My Adidas!" and, omg, so. much. brilliance!
Sure, Taysway may not have the lyrical nuance of Joni Mitchell and T-Payne lyrics are for a 7 year old. But Amy Winehouse was absurdly gifted (pipes and words) and topped the charts and enjoy him or not, Kanye is as lyrically talented as Morrissey. Sure, he's a dick but so was Moz!
Simple. Clear. The blues in another context.
In the light of all the crazy stuff going on in the world , any music that brings people together and makes them happy is a good thing , and the ipad allowing more people to make music , as well as listen to it , is an even better thing )

Check this out about EDM decline.
Also, why am I getting notices for this thread when I didn't post in it?
It's just that important.

That video was made by Paul Joseph Watson.. He's made a viral video that's stirred quite a bit of controversy. You can finding by you tubing "Paul Joseph Watson..I love my----
yeah i saw that, he generally seems like a huge goober.
Thanks I had not seen that one! Great find. I like alot of different music by the way ,( even some pop now and then) , but then My_ _ _ is doing just fine also.
I just clicked on this randomly because i've heard of this person who seems to be "popular", so was.....curious
don't even know what to say about that, just that I really wish whatever led to this point didn't happen.
It's pop dance music man: Funky Chicken, Mash Potato, the 10000 different 60s R&B "Do the [insert absurd thing here]" attempts, 70s disco drivel, "You spin me right round", "Like a virgin" 80s, "Gonna make you sweat" and bye bye bye 90s... Nothing new, never going away. It's not supposed to be Dark Side of the Moon—it's meant to get the youngins dancing (or horny, which it's been doing since early rock and roll!).
Doesn't do anything for me and I won't be buying any Meghan Trainor records anytime soon but I'll admit that I did find myself singing this one more than once last summer.
Elvis' pelvis was a big deal back then, probably more shocking and controversial than Miley Cyrus today. I'm sure the offended back then warned us that tolerance of Elvis would lead to more "improper" sexual expression in the future. I'll take what comes with the freedom of expression. I've never listened to or watched Cyrus and have no burning desire to do so.
Ultimately, music greatness is decided by its audience. If we don't respect the audience, we're not going to respect the artists. I think it's the nature of "progress" that some of us don't really like what the future appears to hold, but as long as civilization doesn't come crashing down, whatever the people of the future think is great will be great.
@syrupcore
Oh that's the all about the bass girl. Ok didn't know. Just watched the video without sound. It's horrible.
The formula seems to be..gather all the most ridiculous and stupid trends together and put them in a video. My joke about the movie Idiocracy being a documentary is losing its humour by the month.
David Bowie, please come back!
david bowie is gone forever.
