Official MIDI/ Audio support from Apple?

edited March 2016 in General App Discussion

This may be a huge step for iOS audio.

If you are using a USB audio interface with iOS, I'm pretty sure that the entire ecosystem is a "workaround" in the sense that there was no official documentation on the CCK or the USB lightning adapter stating that Apple designed it to work as a MIDI device or a core audio device. (excluding MFi devices that are official and have lightning connections built in)

The new USB3 lightning adapter actually states that it is meant to work with "Audio/MIDI" !!
http://www.apple.com/shop/product/MK0W2/lightning-to-usb-3-camera-adapter?fnode=37

This seems like a small thing, but now we can legitimately consider these adapters to be designed to work with our USB Audio and MIDI devices. And we can return them with legitimacy for repair or replacement if they don't function as designed.

And maybe the bigger issue: we have official cause for expecting Apple to make iOS 9 actually work with Audio and MIDI devices.

Anyone else geeking out about this??

  • Also on the link above, it is interesting to note that the USB 3 adapter officially lists compatibility with lots of iPads but no iPhones...

no word if it charges the iPad though. That doesn't sound good.If i can only power external things with it...why should not just continue to use my powered USB hub?

  • Remember this old chestnut? They were listening! https://forum.audiob.us/discussion/6262/send-a-message-to-apple/p1

I have to think it would charge the iPad. FWIW, The official hdmi adapter description doesn't mention charging the iPad either but other sources online state that it does.

good point, thanks for the info!Yes,then it's likely that this will power the ipad.Woop woop :)

  • Trying to wrap my head around this, 'cause I want this to be the big opening up of iOS -- but what are the limitations?

Its all the same as ever; just that I'm finding some sense of victory in the fact that Apple have finally officially stated Audio and MIDI as supported uses of the USB adapter.

    small victories

  • createdigital music dot com says it will indeed charge your iDevice. Peter Kirn usually knows what he's talking about. B)

yes...and no cause he writes the adapter is only for the"pro"which is not true as we know now ;) So,this community here is still better in serving news

    +1

  • But this is interesting....

"The 12.9-inch iPad Pro transfers data at USB 3 speeds, while the 9.7-inch iPad Pro uses USB 2."

    ...a part from apple description!

Knowing this I bet it's not 4GB ram, maybe 3

Could be. Seems it's not exact the same stuff included. So we really have to wait for first reviews!

Later articles all indicate that the charging feature is only available on the 12.9" iPad Pro, so he was close. B)

  • What would you hook up to the other end of this? I guess you don't need a powered hub, so would you want to use a passive non-powered hub? USB 3.0? A quick search on Amazon looks like most 3.0 hubs with more than four ports are powered. Just plug in the Apple dongle and leave the hub unplugged?

  • Ideally, plug in whatever you want to USB... But also charge the iPad with a standard lightning cable charger. That would be the goal.

What?nah,i can't believe this. That would be too stupid and"indicates"proofs nothing. And then there is the same adapter for HDMI were it works on all models.

IK multimedia has proven as well that this is no rocket science.Afaik they have stuff in their line up that works that way.Works Unfortunately only with IK stuff.

  • Welp, after a few days of reports from the field, looks like I should trust him less until he has actual product in hand. Very happy to hear that it will charge everything it's compatible with. I'm picking one up this week.
