Why do effects apps insist I turn the mic on, and then line-in room noise I don't want?
I can't tell you how many times I have had to go turn the mic off in privacy settings.
Why don't effect apps make it easier to disable the mic if they insist on you turning it on?
Have I missed something?

Can get some funny results sometimes when you listen back and realise you've just recorded the tv all over that 20 minute ambient piece you just nailed
Exactly!
I thought it was necessary to allow the audio software in IOS to work. Dont remember which app said to make sure it was enabled.

I was under the impression you got whatever the current udo In is. Mic by defuault, interface if connected by default, then Audiobus or AUM, but not a mixture.
I was struggling with this last night in Aum.
Despite having an interface plugged in, it defaulted to microphone input until I switched to non-mic headphones
So John,
Is it a common problem for you to have things "TOO TURNED" on that you "CAN'T TURN OFF"?
Is that how you roll John?
