WTF Apple Store?
I’m sure somebody else has ranted about this before, but…
Why doesn’t the Apple Store help its users find the best stuff in their “Discover” section?
I am all for the Apple Store spotlighting new stuff like Skram and Blocs Wave so they go up to the top of most popular apps.
Under “Mix & Remix”-- no AUM! No AUM anywhere, for that matter.
Under Drums – No DrumPerfect Pro! No Patterning! But there is “Make a Ringtone with RingSynth!” Of course. Everybody's #1 drum app.
The Whole Studio – This I get. Only GarageBand. Why would you want to tell anybody about Auria Pro or Cubasis or the others?
The Pianos and Synth choices are better than the others. But of course there’s no Korg Module, iSEM, while there is stuff like polychord and forScore (??) And of course my go-to, Magic Piano by Smule.
Maybe I’m missing it, but I can’t find Fugue Machine anywhere. Maybe I'm missing them, but a lot of other apps I use all the time, like Audioshare and Chordbot.
If people could be directed to the best apps, they'd like the experience and would buy more—and there’d be more money for Apple. I’ve spent a lot of money since I started coming to this forum. And it would be a big assist to the hard-working developers.
I suppose it's stupid to bring this up because everybody knows how much Apple blows.
That's why there are so many forums like this, and so many music app blogs. I get it.
Comments
Yep the store is useless for finding anything. Without these forums and the many well run blogs etc, I would never know what was going on in the world of iOS music making apps.
Yet go back many years and I had to buy magazines to find out anything about music gear or computers, or anything really interesting.
I remember buying the first Alien Sex Fiend album through word of mouth. A mate of a mates sister had found it in a record store in London.
The Apple App Store is just not very good at search/discovery.
But in Apple's defence, the Google App Store sucks just as much in this regard. Maybe worse.
I unnerstan' the 'put GB up there' and a lot of the other 'my little pony' products for general fiddle-abouters, what I find contrary to wisdom is THEY (all of THEM!) know precisely what I've spent thousands of dollars on these past few years, why aren't the choices FOR ME aimed at me....? Seems odd.
Because the millions of people spending a little here and there on Angry Turds Jelly Bean edition, spend more than us few big music app spenders.
Are Audiobus and the Apple Store share the same alogrithm here....ouch! Sorry
Mostly i just enter it in google and get better results, yep!
Jaja, unfortunately it's true.
you'd think with their insistence on testing, curation, and approval, they'd be more willing to research this shit and select the coolest / most capable apps to be in the spotlight.
Other than using a few of the apps that came with the iPad, I do mostly music. I only bought an iPad for the music apps. So I'm truly no expert on what the general public does with tablets, but my guess is that serious music-making is a small minority. That niche must be a very low priority for Apple, Google, whatever, and the App Stores are set up for what's important to them. Audiobus, Auria Pro, AudioShare, AUM, etc., are made by enthusiastic independent developers because the iPad is capable hardware, but Apple doesn't really need that market. That's how it appears to me.
iMaschine v1 is a featured drum machine, definitely muppets running that show !
I use my iPad only for music apps and watching true crime shows.
My phone is the true workhorse
That the ratings disappear with every new version is a problem
It's really disappointing
that stuff just sits there and hangs there for years, no one is looking after this
I agree to you all... Appstore sucks!
And, another feature that should be there is the possibillity for devs to leave comments on reviews in Appstore...
Sometime I have an love/hate relationship with Apple...
There was a time when you could see a list of apps in any category by release date. That was a great way to browse through new apps or review older ones. I don't see any way to do that these days. It's sort of there, but not the same.
I always have a love/hate relationship with Apple. It's tough when a company holds all the cards with something you're passionate about, and their focus is elsewhere. Apple's a culture and agenda. They want to control all to make their products super groovy to the majority so as to continue to build their empire. It can be frustrating when my desires are not in line with theirs, but if you can live with exactly what they want to sell you, good things can be had.
Despite the App Store inadequacies, unfairness, and apparent disfunction, Apple seems to be doing well. If the music side is to prosper and grow, it will only do so on Apple's terms.
@anickt There's a "New in Store" section in the AppZapp app (which you can filter by music) as well as "Sales" and "Now Free." That's how I found out that Sugar Bytes apps were on sale and posted about this here.
This is not a only music app thing. In my experience the Crap Store is like this for all categories. You have to do research outside no matter what you're looking for.
There is an animation app called Plotagon that is one of the most amazing apps in the store. Type in a script and it creates animated cartoons. You can use your own voice so users of this forum could have their cartoon avatars sing their songs. But Plotagon is not included in their "animation" section.
I can only imagine how many billions of dollars they are losing in their international stores by not taking some time to direct people to the best stuff.
@anickt
Searches in the store can still be sorted by release date (this selector defaults to "Relevance") the criteria is a little pull down at the top of the search screen (once you do a search from main store screen the one with the star).
If the criteria (other selectors are "iPad only" "Any price" "All Categories" etcetc) doesn't appear at first (this happens when you aren't on the star screen) re enter your search term. I do a Music and Synthesizer search this way every little while...
Hey, I think Composer's Sketchpad is a great fit for the Discover section!
(Caveat... I might be the developer of Composer's Sketchpad. )
Seriously, though, I'd love to hear why you think it doesn't belong. I realize it's not designed for production use, but I think there's room for more than one kind of product in the Music category. And I staunchly disagree that it's in the same category as "Make a Ringtone with RingSynth". I made it so that I could get some serious composition work done without having to worry about airplane-cockpit UIs or the frustrating limitations of traditional notation, and it's definitely not a toy.
(EDIT: post originally mentioned my app)
Maybe Apple should create a Pro Audio category?
It's annoying that I get customized recommendations for games but not categoriea I'm really interested in, photo/video, music, etc. seems like at least 60% of the app store's 'energy' is geared towards games. but then i recall that this is all profit-oriented decision-making so i might as well go hum my grievances at a wall.
This was nice to see: just spotted AUM under "Best New Apps":
There's a billion+ apps. Stands to reason Apple's going to (mostly) feature the trending/poplular releases. Me, I'm always happy when I see something like Fugue Machine or Patterning float by under the best apps section, ala @Simo's post above
Wow, this is like Xtranormal was, but no pesky subscription
Also, I use app shopper
Amazon manages it well, based on your purchase history, you may like x, y and z, because others who bought the stuff you have also bought these. Apple has your purchase hisrory, but just isn't smart about using it.
Just downloaded it and deleted it when it demanded I sign in to Facebook to use it. What's that about then?
Exactly.
@BiancaNeve https://plotagon.com/326782
Apple does not have the people/resources to curate everything. They do select apps for featuring randomly based on someone there seeing something that looks cool. But most music apps are way beyond their ability to understand. So you're not going to see AUM on the front page. It's pretty, but not interesting enough for the majority of people.
I also don't understand looking at your purchase history. Amazon does have it down to an art. Apple is leaving money on the table there, which is not like them. That would make way more sense.
I was able to create an account with my email address, and not Facebook.
Still, if you don't like registering for things, you are SOL
@rickwaugh Or even looking at your Wish List. That would tell a lot.
The thing that Amazon does is standard for marketing on the web. When I price out ukeleles online, I start seeing ukeleles everywhere I go. This technology is very primitive and a few decades old.
Obviously, Apple could easily do this, so perhaps there is a reason they don't--for example, wanting to respect the data privacy of their users. That kind of stuff can be creepy.
On the other hand there is a way to use this kind of thing where it is a benefit.
How's that in Apple's defence?
