Need Clip launcher App recommendation...

I wanna be able to play chords while being able to launch either midi or audio clips...what do you recommend?

Comments

  • Go for it!

  • for audio you can try imaschine 2

  • Modstep?

  • With Audiobus remote is it possible to select playing clips while still say playing chords in Navichord?

    Haha

    Yes Modstep!

Can you import you own audio into imaschine 2?

  • I have failed at this myself. I hoped novations launchpad app would work like you would think in abelton. Am I wrong about launchpad app?
Mo bu plat is decent and I used geo synth to trigger loops strangly enough.

  • Yea i-machine 2 you can import your own stuff

  • the new version of garageband is probably the best clip launcher on iPad currenly. you can record and launch both audio and midi loops...launch scenes not just single clips...can record clip performance to the arrangement page. With the built in instruments, IAA, and AU plugins, garageband is the closest thing to Ableton on the ipad.

True, but GB doesn't play nice with other apps (no Link or MIDI sync), has weak effects, etc

  • but it does have panning!

Modstep (sampler) or Gadge (sampler, bilbao or abu dabi)t, or wait for Loopy Masterpiece...
My guess is Masterpiece will have best timestretch ever into a neat sampler, with a crazy simple workflow...

the original poster didn't ask for any of that, just to play some chords while launching midi and audio clips. the new version of garageband is probably the only app that currently does that well and without any outside apps.

i wouldn't call the effects in garageband weak either. there's delay, reverb, eq, and a compressor on every track. also, the new clip launcher page has a bunch of flashy effects like beat repeat, filters, bit crush, etc.

like i said the feature set and workflow is very, very similar to Ableton Live. the closest on the ipad.

  • Nanostudio is still the best! (Sorry could help myself, troll-a-lol-a-li)

  • I've been using LP-5 and integrating it with ModStep, until I last week (in another thread here) learnt about the ability to create perfect loops natively in ModStep, which I am currently exploring.

With LP-5 you can trigger scenes with midi notes. It also has a good stretch and simple import.

Also I am curious about the "other" ones (Launchpad, iMachine etc) and if their workflow allow for quick and simple imports (my previous experience of them is "not").

  • To answer myself regarding Launchpad, which I just re-downloaded: unlike LP-5 it doesn't have Link and I can't find a way to control it (launch clips) via Midi. There is a "Open in..." though. Un-installing again. Next.

I totally agree with all your points. But Ableton Live does have Link, and Ableton Live does have the ability to launch scenes with MIDI or key messages, etc. If you can deal with GB's walled garden then it is without doubt the best option.

You could use the sampler in Modstep, if you are recording your loops in Modstep anyway it is easy to get the samples in. You can also trigger scenes or single clips via midi.

Oh yeah, that was what I learnt in that other mentioned thread, possibly even by you. Great stuff. Still learning how/when to use what, so experimenting a lot with various solutions, but the sampler in ModStep became a lot better when I learnt about the loop recording bit too. Also, when ModStep will get AudioShare import (as opposed to only export) it will be a no-brainer to keep as much as possible within the same app.

I have to say, having used ModStep a lot over the last few weeks, I think it is already awesome value-for-money, and I have still only scratched the surface of what it can do. Weirdly, and unexpectedly for me (owning pretty much all the drum apps), I am currently using the Sampler instrument all the time for drums. I imported a good (and massive) selection of samples, mainly for sketching purposes, and it is turning out so good I rarely can be bothered swapping them out for a drum app. :)

I said previously that my current test-setup involves ModStep/AUM/LP-5 but so far, having worked with that set-up exclusively over the last few weeks, I haven't yet needed the external clip launcher (LP-5 in my case, though I've verified it indeed does work as I thought it would), so finding another clip launcher is for me more about future possibilities/plans.

It is weird though that I experiment with any and all conceivable solution to imagined problems. I was actually quite happy (and very impressed) with Auria Pro. For me it is more about solving the technical challenge, that also in turn makes me more creative when I fiddle with things. :)

I haven't tried recording loops in Modstep yet, or really played with the sampler (although I'm using Modstep extensively for midi loops).

In my Modstep + AUM setup, I struggled with figuring out where is the best place to host an app that you want to sequence.

In the end I got frustrated with IAA limitations in both, and now host everything in AB, mix it through AUM, and sequence it through Modstep midi out. Best of all worlds, but I guess I can't use Modstep to record loops and easily drop them into its sampler if I'm not hosting them in Modstep...

I don't use Modstep (yet?) but I wrestled this same bear recently. AUM/IAA has so much to offer but the downsides you mention are considerable. I still use AUM for mixing stuff but I have a new appreciation for the tradeoffs/decisions the AB folks made.
