Is this legal?

I came across a developer on the App Store that appears to have a habit of blatantly ripping off others apps. Here is the half assed attempt at Sector:

  • That's all up to Apple's quality control. This happens with games so often it's disgusting.

I don't think anyone with a halfway discerning eye would fall for it, but it's always annoying to see when it happens.

  • It's like they didn't even try to hide it.

  • I saw this with an app eerily close to ThumbJam too.

  • Yeah it's so common and so sad. Crooks I tell ya!

  • To be fair, thumb jam is a pretty straightforward interface, I could see someone naturally coming to the conclusion of a vertical keyboard on their own. Sector though? Hell naw.

  • True. We all build off of each other's ideas but this is just a blatant, lazy, (crappy) ol' fashioned ripoff

  • The App Store is terrible for this stuff, especially games.

War of Clans Crush Saga: Don't Flap the Candy! By Nguyen Xiao, with like 1k 5 star reviews saying "best app I play" and "good".

Gives me a chuckle but also really annoys me.

  • If they havent patented their design then I doubt theres any thing illegal going on , but you would hope apple would reject copycat apps to protect those putting in the original work

  • I think Apple is happy to take their 30%, originality be damned.

  • Fisher Price toys...

  • It's legal, but criminal.

  • This copycat company has over 200 apps in Appstore...

    Hard working guys...

Just came to add that. "More by this developer" is 10 pages. Almost all music apps. https://itunes.apple.com/us/developer/music-paradise-llc/id941070953?

I'd be several of those apps are not legal—they're clearly infringing on other peoples IP. You don't need a copyright to prove ownership—it just makes it a lot easier. Where "easier" means cheaper! :) These shitheads survive by knowing that it most can't afford the legal costs to go after them.

Not sure I get your point. There's more to sector than chord diagrams. Just ask the people who made this app for a breakdown. Hell, they even nicked 'RUN' ffs.

  • Maybe some honest , critical store reviews are in order ?

  • And to think, these apps aren't on the bus, such a sad loss.......

  • They're perfect examples of a malady that a lot of apps suffer from... Style over substance.

The GUI's are big and bold, lots of primary colors and big fonts, the operation is touted as being simple and uncomplicated...and on & on.

Problem is read any of the reviews and you'll see they're all shit, "FREE" apps with immediate restrictions and limited functionality without purchase of the "Pro" version upgrade.

It too will be a hobbled, second rate mess...just read the reviews and even the hyperbole filled nonsense in the app description to see it's all cow dung.

The 20 to 30 well known iOS music app development companies have big followings and reputations they've earned. Most devs are stand up people who create great contributions to the scene. The other charlatans are just embarrassing.

Couldn't the same be said for most apps that emulate hardware?

    Slippery slope.

Same could be said for melodies and samples.

    Dicey.

Any other genre or activity, I'd say yeah.

But EDM and House and proprietary property are rarely used in the same sentence.

If it is, then Korg will take care of it.

That is if it was KORG's idea in the beginning...............................

  • Looks like a front for Chinese government/mob.

No different then what they do on purses.

    MY BAD

    RUSSIAN MAFIA/GOVERNMENT

I just checked into some things with a "friend"

    Not surprised at all.

State sponsored rip off of an industry of passionate people, not cool.

Same people do this with many items.......

True, but.....this was a complete carbon copy, with out a lot of the bells and whistles.

This I have to hear. Please elaborate.

On another note, what does this say about the state of the art regarding interface design? I mean it's one thing to map scales to an xy grid. It's another thing entirely to straight up copy Korgs colored loop buttons. Lol they could have at least added grid lines and that would be an improvement! Is there this much of an imagination deficit in the industry? Especially when you're on a platform by a company notorious for a "customers don't know what they like until you give it to them" attitude.

  • I'm picturing a group of guys in shiny leather jackets and ostentatious jewelry proclaiming "Today Sector, tomorrow the AUM!"

  • Their soundprism ripoff would probably be limited to c major and just a bunch of colored blocks with no note labels or grids. upgrade to ToneGrid pro for just 3.99! No extra features! We need money!

Yes, the don't give a toss. Three times I've found office/text apps purporting to be different things from different developers, but actually being the same thing. None of which did what they claimed. To my mind this is fraudulent trading, but Apple's lawyers clearly disagree.

Apple makes alot of money in Russia and because of China.

Same reason they bend when it comes to censorship and they are ok with it in "certain" countries............

  • Doubt wether a Garage Band clone would make it through the review stage, not unless the Apple reviewer wanted to be thrown to the Googles.
