So where's the new ModStep?

I love it but I'm staying away until it's new and shiny!

    What's happening with Modstep then?

  • It is, apparently, 'going to another level' according to a beta tester.

Where's the new Modstep...I would say "on my iPad" but the dev team has updated the beta 3 times in 10 days or so, so what I thought was the new Modstep day before yesterday just got better again last night, and I don't think the team is done because 1. they're still tightening things up and 2. your beloved beta tester proxies, having seen that most things requested for Modstep on this forum are now implemented, thought of yet more stuff to request...which means at the very worst a lot of emails for AppBC to answer, and at best a whole new set of goodies. Given what's already in place: well worth the wait. Been working inside Modstep exclusively for weeks, since the beta I haven't looked back.

    Pattern sequencer? crosses fingers

*Edit: by which I mean chaining/arranging of course!

    B)

  • I've been testing too. It's closer, but only the Modstep team know how close til release.
Lots of great improvements. It's a big update and worth the wait. :)

  • Can't wait for a song mode or pattern sequencing or whatchacallit... would really be like an IAA Gadget thing then.

  • You guys think it might go on special when the update comes up?

  • There hasn't ever been a special until now so I'd say it's very unlikely. I'd be glad to be wrong, though...

  • I'd say - should the new improvements be all they're hyped up to be - it'll be worth its full asking price. I certainly hope so, as I bought the current version but find I don't quite get along with it.

Man, you and I think exactly alike! 1 Peter 3:8.

  • @Littlewoodg I'm hoping it has midi-mappable one-click looping... Loopy style, but with midi sequences rather than audio. Dynamic pattern lengths based on when you stop recording, instead of having to know ahead of time that you want to record X number of bars. Hoping for too much???

    haha, did i say that.

    You guys won't be disappointed.

I used it at a weekend jamming with a mate, Modstep vs Ableton style.

The beta seems really solid so can't be long now.

Oh and now Seekbeats works nicely. The dev fixed the external midi issue.

  • Have been (and remain) on the Venerable Fence. Looking forward to getting a stiffly persuasive push.

  • I hope there is going to be :
a keyboard option to perform from within the app like AUM and many others, not just square pads.
And a delete note button just like gadget, that deletes note at the play head while running, of a specific note pushed, like Impc pro, in piano roll.
A template for more popular ios apps.
    Audio clip recording
    ....
Is the a feature request page?

  • Forgot, a better way to choose octave in step sequencer...

  • My list:

A global UNDO button that works while recording midi (functionality like gadget)

same editing behavior in "melodic" note editor like drum note editor or way less modifier buttons actions

chord templates depending on key scale

this one would be great. a nas/network access (like the one by fileexplorer) for samples

    well less bugs

  • I haven't bought modstep yet but I'm planning to (just don't need it yet, but will). I spoke to the devs about it previously and they told me that there is no remote trigger integration.

    So here's my request:
    REMOTE TRIGGERS

That would be a bonus but most things are midi learnable so remote triggers are midi controllers already, you could design your own remote in Lemur for example.

True of course, but then I'll have to switch back and forward between my chosen midi design app and ABr.. while performing already technically challenging music on my instrument;)

  • I trigger clips using my Launchpad (and the active triggers stay toggled on), is that the sort of thing you mean @OscarSouth ? It works flawlessly already.

ABr is a gift from heaven for hybrid iOS/instrumental performers and it's as much for the fast switching (if not more) than the triggers themselves. It would not be possible to perform technical material while interacting with iOS (for me at least) without the additional control and app switching of ABr. I do also use a midi controller (and floor controls..) but there are simply necessary tasks that ABr performs that these cannot.

As far as implementing triggers.. if your app supports Audiobus (which is almost universal) then in my opinion (unless there's literally no possible function they could perform) not implementing Remote Triggers is nonsense. I can't understand why any enthusiastic dev would choose to pass on such available and useful functionality (same goes for State Saving).

Anyway, I don't want to derail the thread. I'm looking forward to seeing what the modstep update brings to the table, as I'm planning to invest in this app. That's my feature request!

  • I just spent nearly 5 hours trying to figure out how to sequence SampleTank 3 in FL Studio via Modstep and getting the MIDI files to play back properly per channel, but I finally did it. Nice to just tap those clip launchers and get a whole song laid out in separate tracks.

It's actually sort of sad because from what I read online, other DAWs handle MIDI a lot more obviously than FL, which means I spend hours trying to replicate what flipping a switch would do elsewhere.

I'm starting to get curious as to whether Modstep will nicely/politely send audio from the ipad into FL, I gave up on Studiomux awhile back cuz of constant frustrations, but it would be thrilling if EVERYTHING ACTUALLY WORKED.

  • Good thing is the satisfaction of knowing you figured out something you really wanted done. I really hope the developer is seeing the frustration and time it takes to complete possible simple tasks which are prolly what's keeping a lot of folks on the fence with modstep. I appreciated how Synthmaster devs heard users requests and worked out UI. Even many other devs here that are interacting with their user base. I hope Modstep gets all the rough edges taken care of.

  • This wasn't Modstep's fault, it's FL's routing structure. But honestly after reading the manual and using the '?' in-built help, Modstep has not been that difficult to figure out.

  • We need more how to videos.
