Creating new synth drum samples

Spent an hour or two generating some new samples to play in Bilbao this morning.

Pressing the random button in Poseidon often generates some great percussion noises. From there I was recording a short loop of several pitched hits then exporting that to Audioshare to trim and normalise. Then I exported all the samples to DropBox and followed up by importing them into Bilbao.

While this is great, I wonder whether I could have a quicker/simpler workflow? Also does anyone have other recommendations for synth apps that will generate random percussion noises?

  • SeekBeats and Elastic Drums come with a randomizer. Actually any synth can do percussions as long the amp env has short attack and decay with no sustain, better if they get some enveloped modulation to frequency, filter and frequency modulation.
Probably using AudioCopy will be a bit faster than Dropbox, and won't need Internet connection. Then probably instead of using the built in recorders it will also be faster to load your instruments directly into AudioShare as IAA so you can skip the import and a cloned files.

  • Trimming each sample is one of those ( to save on memory) must do jobs really, but you can use the start and end points in Bilbao.

Impaktor makes great synth drums, I export single hits and loops, it has a randomise button also. And you can import to Bilbao from Audio copy/paste app.

I know I can create drum hits in any synth. Was just curious if any forum members had recommendations for synths that created particularly interesting percussion sounds.

Thanks, yes that does seem a quicker workflow. Was also wondering whether any apps could be set up to auto sample incoming noises above a certain threshold. Alternatively a sample editor that will slice a recording into beats?

Thanks, I do have Impaktor squirrelled away somewhere.

Even if you are talking about synthesis a awesome source for drums is a actual microphone and a bunch of stuff to hit.

    Good point m!

  • Setup: lamp, drumstick, iMac for bowed, internal mic, AudioShare. Closing the window would help
