iOS 9.3.1 forced download?

This afternoon I noticed, after surfing in Safari for about 30 mins, that my iPad Mini 2 discharged rapidly from around 80 % to 10. Couldn't see the reason why, neither I found anything odd in the battery usage info in Settings. Then 5 minutes ago I was more than surprised to see in software updates that iOS 9.3.1 was downloaded and ready to install. Which I don't want to do just yet, I'm still on 8.4.1 and happy with it. I never allowed the mobile network to automatically download iOS updates, but found today that this was somehow at some point set to 'allow'. Now I have 1,1 gbs less free space and an update I just don't want to install yet. Anyone experienced anything similar?
Cheers, Gabor

  • Yes, happened for me too. If you don't want to install it, you can go to the list of installed apps in Settings (Manage Storage) and delete it from your device there

Except, again, this is likely (like before) to only delete the loader and not the image. There's still probably a ~1GB image sitting in "Other" that can't be deleted. Had this problem before with 7 as well.

Still - OTOH, as I've posted elsewhere, 9.3 is overall better than 8 and earlier 9 on 64-bit devices. It has resolved a number of icky audio bugs that were in 8 and earlier 9; you would be better to update @jooga1972 - but if you have questions - ask first. :+1:

(And, I say this as a previous 7.1.2 hold out!!!! )

  • Also, you might want to turn off Use Mobile data in Settings->iTunes and App Store

  • So, I'm not the only one this happens to. Apple need to stop this.

  • What I did before was to block the Apple update sites in my router and only opened up those sites when I wanted to update.

However, if one auto connects to wifi outside of that scenario of course, that might just also get the push depending on the date.

  • If you do this, can you still use connect to your phone's hotspot for the net?

That's the point really, that 'use mobile data' was, up to my best knowledge, turned off, then I found this update downloaded....Apple must move in mysterious ways

Done and gone, thanks for the hint! :) Despite the promising fixes 9.3.1 has to offer, I will stick to 8.4.1 until I will absolutely have no choice but to update. Everything has worked like a charm since I am on 8.4 and I don't want the magic gone. If and when my must have apps stop working under iOS 8 I will go up. I used to have far too many issues earlier with every single update, both in OSX and iOS so I guess I'm just extra careful here. Thanks for chiming in everyone!

If you delete it, you may still have the actual install image hanging around however as I mentioned above. That space cannot be reclaimed unless you actually install it :open_mouth: That was how it was before. I suspect the same is true now.

I think so. As far as I understand, this setting disables the automatic downloads using 3G networks

You are probably right. I did a full restore a week ago and, to my joy and surprise, it reclaimed about 2Gb of space. I'm not 100% sure but I suspect it could be one of those images

  • The update is listed as only 22.9MB. I'll wait before downloading it though.

Minor updates are small in size, but if you are upgrading from iOS 8 to 9 - it can weigh 1Gb or more

  • It happened to me as well. But as MusicInclusive mentions, the upgrade seems to be a useful one. I was concerned that it was going to slow down my iPad (that's why I held off as long as possible) but it doesn't seem to be the case.
