MusicIO from Power Trio midi over USB - Anyone get this to work?

Trying to send midi from Ableton Live 9 on a Windows 10 laptop over to my iPad Air over USB using MusicIO. I never get the Connect symbol, which is the very first step if you have the app and the VST running. I've got all the other Midi components running on the PC (Loopmidi and RTPMidi) but it never gets to Connected. Tried getting help from Power Trio but no luck there. Not concerned about the audio just trying to get midi back-and-forth between a PC and my iPad. Anyone having success with this?

  • works in win7 with reaper and ios8

  • Hi -- I'm part of the Power Trio team -- we're slammed with some development, and are behind in the support queue. I'll try to fish this ticket out of Zendesk, and chase after it there.

I've had no trouble with Win10. To check, you've got iTunes installed, and that's finding your iPad, right? A missing iTunes install is behind a large portion of the support emails. Standard trouble-shooting after that is to try switching USB ports, avoiding USB hubs, and maybe a different cable.

  • @SecretBaseDesign didn't know about needing iTunes installed. I've got it installed now and the PC sees the iPad but still no luck. Tried a different cable, different USB ports, any other suggestions I'm at a loss. Bonjour is installed, should I uninstall it?

  • If you have rtpmidi already, connect midi via network session, for now ...

  • Next thing to check is a network firewall -- the VST needs to make a network connection (that's how the USB connection happens, software-wise).

  • @SecretBaseDesign does MusicIO have an option to disable the app sleeping, sometimes when this happens it can be a real problem re-connecting, with synths having to be closed, then restarted on my iPad.

  • @SecretBaseDesign Firewall for Ableton is open for private and Public. Any others I would need to do?

  • @SecretBaseDesign any other suggestions you might have? I've worked my way through your FAQ, Reinstalled Loopmidi and musicIO. Checked that the ports are open for Ableton and even turned off the firewall but no luck.

  • Reboot both PC and iPad, plug the iPad and make sure you see the "trust this computer?" message on your iPad. If not follow unplug your iPad and follow this guide
    https://support.apple.com/en-gb/HT202778
    to untrust the computer.
Plug again, select "trust". Launch iTunes , try to sync to check your Windows machine is communicating properly with your iPad.
Then close iTunes and try again with Ableton.

  • @Korakios Thanks for the assistance, but still no luck. Do you know if it's normal to get 2 chimes in succession when I plugin the usb cable?

  • Don't know, haven't noticed it to be honest. Does iTunes works with your iPad?

Does iTunes recognise your iPad, because on my Win 8 laptop when I connect multiple devices, sometimes my iPad doesn't get recognised, my research into this points to a problem Windows has in its handling of USB 3 ports, what helped in my case a little was to disable the internal webcam and card reader, these use valuable USB resources.

  • @SecretBaseDesign @Korakios @knewspeak I've made some progress and I have a connection. After reinstalling Loopmidi and musicIO and going through the "Trust this Computer" procedure and then reinstalling Ableton, musicIO is recognizing my pc. I'm still not getting midi notes into any synthesizers but I'm sure that is operator error. Thanks to all who helped out on this problem.

Is MusicIO available and selected as a midi receiving port in your iPad synths?

Yes it is but I haven't figured where the midi channel number is assigned. I see musicIO in Gadget but which channel is it coming in on?

  • Glad it worked :)
Port is ,well , a port. Meaning it receives all midi channels as it should be.
You must assign the midi channel output in Ableton:
