iConnect Audio4
Anyone know if this works properly with an Air2 yet?
Comments
Yes, running ICA4+ with iPad Air 2, iOS 9.3, no issues.
Thanks. Do you use the app? Their web site says it still has issues with Air 2.
I use the 'iConnect for Audio" app, and it seems to work. I've reconfigured the patchbay, and used the mixer, saved to flash, that all works. You can't save "scenes" or whatever.. but I'm not sure if that's supposed to be supported from the iOS app. What are the reported issues?
It doesn't say on their site. I'm just thinking of use as a two iPad interface with a USB midi keyboard. As long as the basics work. I would not have complex midi routings.
iConnectivity made a great audiointerface with the iCA4+; I use it every day without problems and it's very nice to be able to use my iPad Air (1) as a (charging!) 'sound- and midi-module' in my PC-DAW (et vice versa). But I don't like to use the software that comes with it. Nor the iConfig-app, nor iConfig for Windows. Luckily I have a 'steady' setup, so I had to use the patchbay in iConfig for Windows only once to connect my ins and outs where I want and use them. I never use the (rather complicated) iConfig-mixer, because you can do that (easier) with your DAW (on iPad or PC). There are always problems reported on their websiteforum with firmware-updates - maybe because these updates work via midi system exclusive messages (?). The app is much to fiddly for me and there's no undo/redo and no saving/loading of presets. But as I said, in a 'steady' setup you hardly ever have to use it!
NB. I think that the Air 2 problems were related to the IOS 9 bugs. As you know these bugs are solved with IOS 9.3.
Thanks for that. Seems ideal then. Just set her up once and forget - I like that
oh, the no undo thing? when working in the patch bay, and you think you can scroll the screen ( which you can't) and mistakingly add or delete a route but have no idea what you just did? frustrating!
I'm using if for live use, with an iPad Air 2 and iPad 4th Gen. It does a good job of charging the iPad connected to USB1 and keeping the other, connected to USB2 "steady" without too much drain on the battery.
I have no regrets associated with my ICA4+ purchase.
Must be pretty stable if your using it live.
My needs are basic. Just playback from two iPads and recording to one. Also midi to both devices from one controller (not chosen yet).
Seems to be the device for me. I was considering the Soundcraft Signature 12 MTK desk, but still can't find confirmation of iPad compatibility.
Thanks for all your comments guys
well.. you should know I haven't gigged with it yet.
lots of rehearsals though - it's an all iOS duo.
first gig is 15-APR, but my areas of most concern is more around the apps, less with the interface.
What's your app setup plan?
I'm thinking all my drums from one iPad and keys from the other with guitar and mic plugged in.
Well, it's not finalized, this is a relatively new duo project, started as a traditional guitar, bass, vocals, tube amps, pedalboards, etc. Then we wanted more, thought about bringing a DJ type person onboard, but then decided to go iOS and see how much musical noise we can create with it, as a duo.
A low-stress gig at a local bar fell into our lap, for 15-APR so we said "sure" and set about to see how far we can get by then.. We hope to get much more proficient at real time fx, seamless song transitions.. stuff like that as time goes. For now we working with our 10 original songs, written for git/bass/vox and adding sonic gravy to that.. .ok, so, current state:
iPad 4th Gen:
* Recorded .wav drum tracks, mostly created from iSpark, loaded into AUM "file player", one for each song. These tracks are enabled/disabled via Midi Designer Pro. AUM Play Toggle and Rewind functions are mapped to both my Lauchkey Midi Controller and my Positive Grid BT4, so they can be started/stopped by hands or feet!
* Bias FX - One patch per song that is selected via PC commands sent by Midi Designer Pro by same "button press" that selects the drum track.
iPad Air 2:
* Loopy - no looping involved, but Loopy is Ableton Link enabled and allows for tempo change via Midi, so Midi Designer sends tempo change CC to Loopy, Loopy sets the tempo for all other Ableton Link apps
* Elastic Drums - running a simple beat to blend between songs. In never stops playing, the AUM Channel level is faded in and out by an expression pedal connected to a Blueboard.
* 3 Eden Synths loaded in a Nanostudio channel in AUM. Level controlled by faders on LaunchKey midi controller. This required Midiflow to route the midi data to the appropriate channel in Nanostudio. I haven't gotten very far with the synths yet, but I went with Eden for now due to their low resource requirements.
* AUM channel with Vocal Rack FX, RP1 and Stereo Designer in effects slots - for vocals, obviously
I'd like to work in Midi Guitar 2 to add some synth "stuff" in parallel with the guitar, level balanced with an expression pedal, but I haven't got that ironed out yet.
Lots more work to do, with real time DJ type Turnado type effects, but this is the current state of my "rig" for now
Cheers!
I don't mind the patchbay too much, after a bit of work, but agree about the mixer. Aum is perfect for this, with added eq etc. The midi patchbay took a while, but seems to work every time I plug in so....
I'm having a really hard time figuring out the differences between the 2+ and 4+ (other than price)
I'd love a breakdown of what you CAN'T do with the 2
More inputs I guess. Which for me would be gold but still not enough for my needs(Electribe, vintage farfisa, at megaton, monotron, kaosspad 3 and mini)
the 2 does not support 2 ios devices, and does not come with a power adapter (and cannot charge an ios device without it)
Happy ICMA4+ user here. Config app is just awful though. Too many options!
And this from you ;-)
Yeah agree i soundwork over 20years now and think too, a less complex/confusing patchbay would be nice!
Hi, I work with iConnectivity and I got wind of this thread.
First, just to confirm what's already here: http://www.iconnectivity.com/blog/ios-93-and-os-x-el-capitan-10114-solve-audio-issues
Second, you actually can use a second iPad, quasi-unofficially, with the iConnectAUDIO2+ and the Apple Camera Connection adapter. The one in the iPad port will charge if you're using the optional adapter.
Thanks for coming here to confirm those things Nick.
So the Audio4+ seems to be my ideal interface.
thanks Nick, a couple of questions...will you be able to save and load presets in iconfig for iOS in the future?
What's the best way to get iOS to see the correct midi port names? I tried resetting my iOS device but my iPads still see long iconnectivity port names
I'm afraid I don't know the answer to either of those questions, Carnbot. They're working on an updated version of iConfig, but whether those are iOS limitations is something I'll have to find out.
To be continued...
As I understand it @Carnbot, iOS locks in to the port names it first sees. So, even if you change them, it won't see anything different on iOS - ever. (Unless you do a complete reinstall AFAIK).
As to iConfig for iOS, the word is more developments are on the way at some point.
Thanks, I've managed to get the correct port names working now after an ipad reset, it still uses the iconnectAUDIO4+ prefix but then correctly adds the right name. so as long as you keep the same hardware setup it's good, but I'd need to reset again if I changed it. Bit annoying hopefully Apple will change this.
The weird thing was after a reset it broke iconfig iOS app completely for a while on my AIR 2, just wouldn't work at all but was still working ok on my mini2 although not all the time. Tried loads of resets, reboots of both ipad and iCA4+ and reinstall of iconfig but when connected to the iCA4+ the iconfig app would just say "communication lost" In the end I gave up and left it....came back a few hours later and it was working again.
