Process audio from video on iOS

I have made a short video (nothing serious, just a fun family caper) and edited it in Cute Cut Pro.

I knew the audio was muffled / really low in the mix but was keen to get it uploaded to YT to show the kids etc but I would really like to go back and try and sort the dialogue. Is there a video editor app with audio processing capabilities (i.e. compression / eq mainly). Or is it easier to just process the audio offline and then synchronise.

Comments

  • Auria pro has some video capabilities but I haven't tried em yet. Most of the others editors have just volume controls.

Out of curiosity: how did the voice recording being so low passed?

  • Auria has a video import add-on, if you have Auria.

  • Sadly I don't have Auria, will look into this. Is the video feature limited to the Pro version?

There is absolutely no audio processing, audio came directly via the internal mic on my iPad Mini 2. The kids in particular are really quiet. This was all done in the spur of the moment (from conception to completion in an hour) with very little time for setting up microphones etc.

I overdubbed the music directly in Cute Cut Pro using my OP1.

  • You might try "Audio Fix" by Future Moments. It ˋs pretty good for "simple" fixes. There is a free version also,so you
    can try it first.

  • Edit: Auria is the "professional" way to go,of course!

Haha if you saw the quality of the video you would realise that this is not a professional production!

  • Thanks all for responses, I will check out Audio Fix.

    iMovie is free.

    • Open the original movie in iMovie.
    • Exit out of the project.
    • Export project to AudioShare
    • Edit file
    • Import audio back into iMovie as audio track
  • I have no "export project to AudioShare" option in iMovie, can you perhaps elaborate?

  • export to "other application"

    then choose AudioShare

  • It doesn't show up under "other application", the movie exports and then nothing happens.

  • I use Beat Time! To strip audio from video for processing then put it back in the clip using Pinnacle Studio.

Ok. I was curious about this myself. And gave it a try. AudioShare does not show up as choice to export out of iMovie. At least not on my devices (iPhone 5 & iPad Air 2) Not even if you use "other application".

However, messing around with audio soundscapes for arty videos is the main reason I started exploring iOS music apps.. I was curious if it was possible to strip out an audio track only within the iOS environment.

So, I just tried everything I have and found one way. The ONLY audio-centric app that shows up when exporting out of iMovie on my devices is AudioStretch. I only have the free version so the track is limited to 3mins. From AudioStretch you can export to AudioShare.

Getting the edited audio track back into your video...

I think the only way you can import audio back into iMovie iOS is via iTunes. I thought it supported audio paste, but I just tried and couldn't get the option.

However, another decent and easy to use video editing app DOES have audio paste and you can import audio in from AudioShare, Dropbox, iTunes, etc. That app is called Vee for Video

I just tried all of this myself and it worked fine. I'm sure there are other ways too, but this one works for sure.

ps. I could have done this with Auria since I also have that one and paid for the video module. You don't have to get Pro for the video function. It's an IAP for about $5. I tried this because I wanted to see if I could do it on the iPhone which obviously doesn't have the Auria option. ;)

  • huh, sorry about that guys. AudioShare shows up for me. (version 2.7.3 on iPad Air2. iOS 8.4.1)

Anyway, any app should work that will then let you choose "open in." GoodReader or FileBrowser also show up on my "other application" list. Then just "open in" AudioShare and you can convert to wav or something.

    iMovie is free.

(for majority of users, as the license comes included with new iOS devices. But you are right, if you are on an older device, not sure what the cutoff was... then iMovie has to be purchased)

I personally would not purchase iMovie since there are other options out there, but it was free for me and works great for certain tasks.

That weird. I just tried again and I still don't get AudioShare as an option. (Version 2.73 on iPad Air2 iOS 9.3)

There are other options but they all copy the whole video, not just the audio. And no AudioShare option at all. I don't have FileBrowser but I have AirShare which shows up but fails when you actually try to use it. Only way it works for me is the way I described.

Strange that it would work in your older iOS version but not in the latest version.

  • very weird... it must be something about the way iOS 9 works.

  • Audio Fix has managed to improve the audio, now I don't need the volume right up to hear the dialogue. It can apparently rip the audio too, but not in my free version anyway.
