A newbie question about using Audiobus to play multiple synth apps at the same time
Hello,
I'm very new to the iPad music app scene, and I have a simple question that I couldn't find a specific answer for. I'm guessing that Audiobus will be able to do this, but I wanted to make sure before I bought it.
Can I use Audiobus itself as a sort of "virtual mixer" so that I can layer sounds from 2 or more synth apps at once? Right now, I am able to have a Korg iM1 patch and a Garageband patch responding to my MIDI keyboard at the same time by setting them both to play in the background, but this isn't a very elegant solution because I can't really balance their volumes well other than going to each app and adjusting its master volume.
Would Audiobus allow me to send MIDI to both apps at once, and be able to balance their audio in itself? I would like to be able not only to balance level, but also to pan each app's output. Or would I have to download another app as well, and use Audiobus to route both apps' outputs to the third app, and use the third app as a virtual mixer?
I only really use the iPad as a hardware synth, so I don't really need any of Audiobus' features regarding sending a synth app's audio to an effects app, or a DAW app for recording. I just want to be able to, for example, layer a Korg iM1 synth patch with Garageband's electric piano, and play that layer from my keyboard.

I believe the app you are looking for is AUM. I don't use it myself but have read much about it. Anyone else care to confirm?
you want AUM. you may not need audiobus if all your synths have solid IAA
Great - AUM looks like exactly what I was looking for. A little pricier than I was hoping... but I guess $18.99 isn't so bad in the grand scheme of things.
AUM by Kymatica is specifically designed for live mixing of multiple apps. You can also record from AUM right into a shared space with AudioShare, another app by Kymatica. AUM also works with Audiobus, which gives you more options very cheaply. If you use more apps for more purposes, both apps are recommended.
For "only" layering and panning up to 8 ynths, you can also save little money buying Audiobus + Mimix... But, AUM really worth the asked price
Anyway, in both cases (AUM and/or AB+Mimix) you won't be able to load Garageband as a sound generator, so you'll still have to manage it "alone".
... Except controling Garageband's volume and pannig with other synths in AUM or MiMix (or I've missed something... and would be very happy to be wrong and be taught how to do...)
AUM is definitely the app you're looking for. Some apps will respond to MIDI Volume commands so you might be able to skip the mixer and so just that.
Also, AUM + Audiobus is a really powerful combo. Among other things, Audiobus supports 'state saving' which will allow you to store the state of all apps loaded to into AB (if they also support AB state saving which many do). You can see a list of apps that support state saving by looking on the apps list here on the site.
What's cool here is that AUM supports AB state saving. So if you load AUM as an output in AudioBus and your synths as inputs you can have entire setups with volumes and effects recallable with a single touch.
