I found a quick little fix for the Pioneer RMX-1000 app.

As a full-time DJ, I was pretty stoked when Pioneer released the RMX-1000 app. I've used Pioneer gear for years (since the CDJs had spring loaded flip tops) and the app does nearly everything the $800 hardware unit does (except loading user samples).

The only drawback I could find is that Pioneer didn't change the interface to take advantage of the touchscreen at all. All the buttons and knobs are at least half the size of the hardware which were already pretty small.

For playing around on the couch that's fine but I found the GUI too cramped and buttons way too fiddly to use at a gig. Perhaps that's Pioneer's strategy...to give users a taste of the workflow and effects in hope they'll lust after the expensive hardware version.

If only Pioneer had included a zoom mode. Well tonight I remembered that iOS has zoom built-in. You have to set it up to your liking and pick your battles, but OMG...it freaking works and makes the app actually usable in a real gig setting.

  • I forgot to mention the way I have it set up. There's basically 3 different sections: one for the tempo controls, one for the looping, and one for the build up/break down FX. Each one is a 3 finger swipe away and you can double tap to go back to the regular size.

  • Good thinking makes it far more useable thanks @coolout
