Auria -> Thumbjam -> Auria

I wrote a piece in Notion, exported it as a midi file, and imported to Auria. One of the parts if a flute part, and I like the sound of the Shakuhachi in TJ. So, I set the output from the Auria track with midi to TJ. I set up an audio track in Auria with TJ as an IAA insert. I use the settings control in Auria to go to TJ. I set TJ to use the flute, I turn off reverb and delay. I have the track armed in Auria already, so I press play in the IAA control in TJ. The second it starts, the instrument in TJ flips over to the French horn. I have enough lead in to quickly reselect the flute, and I have to turn off delay and reverb again, but this is obviously not optimal. Anyone have thoughts? @WaveMachineLabs, @sonosaurus? I'm either doing something dumb, my entire flow is wrong, or this should work.

  • Sounds like a program change message in the midi file. Do you have a midi monitor app to take a look?

  • OK. Make sure you are sending to the right MIDI channel in TJ from Auria.

    E.g. - here I have the Shakuhachi flute set on slot 1, which corresponds to MIDI channel 1.

    I send to MIDI channel 1 from Auria. If I sent to 2, it would play the same notes on the cello.

    Check the MIDI settings in TJ as well to make sure the Input channel start is set to 1, and the note input is set to Auria.

    I also, as it happens, had the same flute on MIDI channel 3 in the TJ pics above. That was simply by accident :smile: , but if I'd chosen 7, it'd be Bass bowed, 5, would be Violas SUS, etc.

  • @MusicInclusive excellent sussing and input.

  • No love, @MusicInclusive, but thanks for that. I set it to channel 1. Made sure channel 1 was the start in TJ. I actually unloaded out everything but slot 1, and had slot 1 set to shakuhachi. I started record, TJ flips to TE French Horn. It actually removed the shakuhachi from slot 1, and replaced it with the horn. I hit pause in the IAA control, change it back to shakuhachi, remove the effects, and press play, and it records fine. I'm wondering now if @funjunkie27 is correct, and I have some kind of program change message in the file.

  • So, tried a different track. I also have violin. Same set up. It flipped over to one of the mellotron samples. Deleted it, started over, but started it a few beats in, (I have a count in bar,) and it worked fine. It could be that notion is putting some kind of control characters at the start. Also, it looks like MusicInclusive was able to get it to work fine, so the difference would have be my file.

    Again, thanks for taking the time to show me all that, @MusicInclusive .

  • @rickwaugh - try it without any input from Notion, i.e. just create some MIDI within Auria - see if you hit the same issue.

  • Sounds like a program change is embedded in the midi, like others mentioned. If you can't find a way to strip it out in Auria, then go to TJ Midi prefs and turn off the Use Program Change option.

    That worked, turning off the program change. What the change is, and why it's there, no idea. Just something to keep in mind going forward, as I can see doing this more.
