Polyphony Question
Sorry, this is not an AB question and maybe not an iOS question either...? My question is about polyphony. I am looking to purchase a hardware synthesizer and control it with another midi controller but I noticed that the synth only has an 8 note polyphony. Besides the synth sounds I was hoping to trigger the pianos, ep's etc. from this unit, but 8 doesn't sound like enough! I would need to play legitimate big piano chords with sustain pedal and I'm assuming the polyphony will be an issue for this. I saw demos where pianos were played and it sounded fine, but seemed like more jazz triads and such in those videos and no big sustained chords. Can someone please shed some light on this? Would this be a bad unit to buy if needed for traditional piano playing?

If you are looking for real piano get a digital/stage piano like Clavinova. The keys mechanics will be generally better than those equipped on a synth keyboard and a few other things more specific to pianos. Which synth are you looking at by the way?
Thanks @mschenkel. I am looking at the Korg microkorg xl. The thing is, I already have a midi controller and I prefer it over stage pianos, hardware keyboards etc. because it is very light! Also, I use the controller with my iPad but would like to add an external unit with my setup. I was thinking of a rack sound module initially, but the Korg has a lot of sounds and features that would be useful for me and it is small and affordable. Using the midi controller addresses the issue of tiny keys but my only concern is whether or not there is enough polyphony for piano work.
The Microkorg xl is not the right synth if you want rompler sounds and polyphony, better to go for a Korg MicroStation if you want something modern and small.
8 for piano is definitely a no-no if you want to get a vaguely realistic performance IMO. The micro Korg is a bass/lead machine, not suited at all for piano jobs.
I am not a piano player, and do not know how sustain works with a piano (i.e can you sustain one chord while playing another ?)
If it is 8 note poly then, and the above is something you can/wish to do then you are right 8 notes will be limiting, you have a total of 8 notes at any one time, so if you play a 4 note chord and sustain it while trying to play another 4 note chord, you are already at the limit.
Yeah, I love the microkorg for all of the synth sounds and vocoder and would certainly utilize it for the features it is designed for. Was just hoping that I could get away with using it's piano sounds too so that I don't need to buy any additional hardware. Looking for an affordable "one stop shop" but I'm not sure it exists!
