New AirJamz wrist air guitar controller

  • Hey John - Thanks for the notice. This is Matt from Zivix (Makers of the jamstik+ and AirJamz)

Right now we plan to launch the device with 2 of our own proprietary apps, but we will be releasing more news in terms of it functioning as a MIDI device as well. Stay tuned!

  • @Zivix adding midi messages will make it much more useful for us. Any plans for implementing it?

  • This is kinda cool. I don't know that I would buy it, but it does look like a lot of fun if it works well.

Apologies, guys, but this is easily the funniest gizmo I've ever seen. Huge comedy potential. A device that makes music when the wearer air wanks. :D

    Hahaha. Prestissimo! Prestissimo! Prestissimo!

While I can't officially condone that use, don't worry, we see the comedy potential. We'll let you trigger pretty much any sound you want. Hopefully that satiates your curiosity without giving too much away.

Yes, absolutely. We're the team behind jamstik+ after all, and MIDI is in our blood. The Kickstarter project is marketed towards the singular use of air guitar for real, but we have some surprises up our sleeves for the more music-tech savvy.

Being serious now, good luck with Airjamz. Not really my kind of thing, but I can imagine LOTS of wannabe guitar stars having fun with it.

Thanks Nathan, that's our mission exactly. We live in an age where people expect instant gratification, and AirJamz will definitely provide that for the wannabe's.

Candidly, it's about the creative spark that goes off. The kids who have played it at trade shows, focus groups etc. literally light up when they realize that they have the potential to make music, and that's what we're pursuing here.

Sure, not all of them will go on to study an instrument or produce tracks, but if we can inspire a few, give people a fun experience and stay in business doing so, then we've done our job.

Did I mention we just made a wearable air guitar and it's for sale for $35?

Lol. Seriously though, I appreciate the conversation around this, and will be here to field any questions or comments. I know we have been vague about the app experiences, but we are doing our best to provide both an instant, "anyone can play this" type of app as well as a more robust, "what the, did I really just create that!?" type of musical interaction that I hope piques the interest of a few of you that frequent this board.

    Best,

    -Matt

  • Hi Matt, sorry to sidetrack the topic a little, but I asked a while back as to whether the guitar samples in the Jamstik+ app could be improved and I received a reply from Zivix saying that you guys are working on it. I hope that's still in the works!

"air wanking". A perfect moniker! I almost spit my coffee on my iPad.

  • @Zivix
Hey Matt wish you and the team all the best of luck with this. Great videos on the Kickstarter.

Hey Necrome - Funny you should mention as actually we have partnered with a group of ridiculously smart guys to bring real-time guitar modeling synths into the experience. You can expect this to translate over to the jamstik+ in due time. Suffice to say it is going to be a dream come true for me as it's been long overdue.

    I guess @moForte!

The current issues holding me back from using the Jamstik+ in a professional context is partly cause of the guitar sample quality and the slight latency in playing (especially when it comes to rhythmically tight tunes). So to hear that one of the issues is probably getting improved on sometime is good to hear :D thanks Matt for keeping us in the loop!

  • I tried this at SXSW and it is a bit weird, but it worked well. I'm not a guitar player so it kinda scared me 'cause it was too good. @Zivix -- Hello, Matt. I'm looking forward to hearing/seeing more about this.

Hey David! Thanks for the message man., it's good to hear from you. Hope you are well!

What do you think about the new product? (and this is a question to others as well) So far we are seeing some decent response but we know it has more potential than so far has been realized. I think part of this is because we haven't really shown off what it can do technically. In the end Kickstarter backers are the early adopters of new-edge technology, thus I'm tempted to switch gears a bit to showcase what else this can do beyond the simple connotations.

I have to admit I'm worried about the mixed messaging. Literally every kid that plays this thing in our initial app experience is elated and their parents love it. It's going to be an awesome family purchase once we go retail. Yet we're hesitant to call it a, "Toy" because it's way more than that.

@TozBourne - Good to see you here! I might have to use your quote in our project - cool?

"I tried this at SXSW and it is a bit weird, but it worked well. I'm not a guitar player so it kinda scared me 'cause it was too good."

You hit it home with your thoughts. Like the jamstik+ and other audio-based hardware that utilizes mobile devices, it's a challenge to market to people without them getting their hands on it.

I'm sure a lot of people here have created experiences and know that it's tough to market something and develop it at the same time, but this thing has a lot of potential and part of it is identifying what paths to take. That's the beauty of launching on Kickstarter, isn't it.

Suffice to say, we're also on the edge of some really cool technology with this device.. we decided to build a gyroscope into it a month before the project and we have a soon to be announced experience that will show this off really well, but I fear that so far, people think it's a toy because we are able to make it so cheaply. Our engineers are sitting here like, "Ok when do we show the other crazy stuff this thing can do." - Well we can't get too weird yet, but we will if that's what makes sense.

Here's a quick demo using our prototype I did down at our airbnb at SXSW. We haven't included it yet as we plan something more polished, but I'd love your feedback. Is this what people need to see?

Should our new tagline be: "This is a toy that is actually a serious musical wearable that we're not going to price ridiculously."" - Joking - but somehow considering this.

    Also @johnfromberkeley - that's a very good guess.

Thanks for handling my candidness, I really would love to hear what you guys think.

    Cheers,

    -Matt

It's a little bit like the Power Glove marketing challenge.

  • @Zivix Yes, totally cool
