Speaker/monitor recommendations
Can someone recommend a decent pair of speakers that will allow me to hook up the headphone out from ipad directly into the speakers? Something in and around the $100 range if possible?

Behringer MS16 Work well for low end speakers. On sale at Amazon for 79:99 US. Good reviews.
in the $100 range, I'd be inclined to just buy an older (70s/80s) stereo with an aux in. You'll need a headphone to rca adapter. You can find amazing things in thrift stores. They'll be bigger than $100 desktop monitors but will sound a whole lot better!
You're not going to get anything 'neutral' for anywhere near $100 and that's totally fine. Just get used to how they sound and mix accordingly.
+1 for syrupcore's suggestion. A friend of mine mixes on an old JVC stereo from late 80's or early 90's and his mixes translate well because he's so used to how they sound.
I've never heard the Behringers suggested by mgmg4871 though, they may work well too.
