Easily trained is not true. But yes people have done research in this area with mixed success.
Agreed- I did say "comparatively"
. I suspect the real issues is not reproduction of the sound (that is a sample, right?) but allowing expression and evolution of the sound in a musical way. And I agree it is not clear whether there is sufficient market to make this a vaiable product.
Fourier transform is only the analysis part. The challenge is what to make of it to create great sounds.
No, that's additive synthesis and re-synthesis is much easier than finding the appropriate FM parameters to achieve a certain sound that you have an example (a sample) for.
It is, but you have to create a data set for every single synth separately and it only really makes sense to use synths that have enough control to change a sound freely over time.
It can also take a lot of time to create the data set with millions of combinations to sweep through and if you don't do it this way but rather rely on genetic algorithms instead, you'll spend the time later for each sound reverse-engineering run.
I find that an exciting subject but maybe not exciting enough to invest the time 😉

One way to make the spectrum analysis and resynthesis more concrete is to take a picture of the spectrum - the x-axis typically represents time (e.g. Audio Analyzers typically do that).
You can use Virtual ANS 3 to turn the picture back into sound - moreover, this app can also generate spectra from audio.
