I can't watch your video. I hope it shows something like "Shoom is becoming AUv3"...but this would be too good to even exist...

Must of been the devs video definitely not mine. Just checked.

  • God!!

Fantastic news. And MPE!!! IF they bring on the AU some time soon, it will be even more amazing. Thank you dev!

  • One unfortunate observation: mpe seems to be working slightly strangely on a seaboard. If I play a preset with y axis settings, the y axis settings do not trigger when I slide from the bottom of a key to the top of a key. They only trigger when I actually press the top of the key rather than the bottom. I’m going to message the dev. Could any other seaboard users confirm this? Would be interested to hear if other controllers have the same problem. I’m sure this will be fixed. Apart from this, it sounds AMAZING. The aftertouch triggers are beautifully done, so good.

  • Funny, I was just going through a bunch of old tracks on ye olde desktop the other day and the one thing that just jumped out at me was Shoom. Really got a lot of mileage out of it before I became an AU cultist. May have to switch things up now and give it another try.

  • EDIT: I just now said there seemed to be a problem with slide on seaboard blocks. User error!! Carry on, lol. (MPE settings are not in settings, they are under the midi icon on the top left). So aftertouch and slide are working amazingly, this is now definitely one of, if not THE most expressive mpe synths on iOS, really really great!

  • The app crashes instantly on iPad 6th gen, 12.3.1 after the update!

  • Well, Well. This is really good news! Off to test on Linnstrument.

  • A synthjoy wonder, this. Gave up all hope for note midi-in two days ago, and deleted it off the device. Dude.

  • This is the age of wonders. I'm getting surprised by the day. What would be next with almost abandonware apps.

  • Imagine a Holderness revival: ahead of their times.
ThumbJam AUv3? Such great sampled instruments.
And the ever useful LUMBeats drummers.
Korg? Gotta be something goin' on in the lab.

But we have such riches to play with.

I know, but the thrill of the chase and the shock of the new....

  • This is a screenshot of Shoom's modulation panel. There are three possible destinations for pressure and three for timbre (Y-axis) out of a list of 15 parameters (see the list) in the drop down menu). Modulation amount can be regulated with the knobs. I haven't found any option for release velocity.

  • There is no option for release.... Yet. But I asked the dev to implement it just earlier today, and I think he will

I had a quick test (busy week!) and it responds pretty well. There are 22 MPE presets and one demo MPE session.
You can choose how to control the synths (MPE or not, midi channel) and change settings accordingly (I always set pitch bend to 12 in accord with my Linn 128). So technically you can control 3 synths with the same MPE controller and each can have different modulation targets.

No doubt this is a drone sound machine. Press a note and move your finger. Just like the on screen playing surface with added pressure and velocity.

I tend to prefer pluck sounds and you can definitely achieve this here too and other, more "regular" sounds. I dare to say the basic waveforms remind me of Xynthesizr but better ears can say more about it. I'm not quite convinced by the range (or maybe I should say curve) of channel aftertouch (pressure) but I have to play more with it.

There is visual feedback for Y-axis and velocity but not for pressure (a pity, because the Linnstruments surface is hard so this is always appreciated). Circles move up and down the screen responding to Y and they are bigger to higher velocities. They could change in size responding to pressure -?-

No doubt this synth is made for the playing surface but having a controller, I wish it could be hidden and give more room for the synth controls.

No release velocity but at first sight a very well done MPE implementation.

I was thinking on Mononoke. Both fall into the "drone" category. Shoom has "8–20,000 Hz pitch range" adjustable to notes (or not). Mononoke has (besides the lovely sound), what, eight notes?

Yuri has published a video by the way, where one of the synths is on MPE mode and the two others are being sequenced by Xynthesizr.

  • Don't get me started on mononoke mpe implementation. I love Bram's apps, but the mpe aspect was an epic fail imo. Glad Shoom is working out for you with your linnstrument tho!

When I heard the first demos and heard it was going to be MPE I was sure it would become my sound, for long pads and also plucked notes (the one I’ve been chasing since I jumped into this iOS music). The I hooked it to the Linnstrument and how big was my disappointment! 😔

Shoom works well, but I don’t think I’m going to use it much, among other things because it’s not AU.

  • Yes, not being AU is definitely a problem, but I will definitely make use of this until we have more REAL mpe synths

    👍💃

  • Oh man, what a Synth! It’s a drone machine I was looking for. And I have quite a few good ones already. Note latching realization in Shoom is just brilliant. And multi out…

(Smacks head) I totally glossed over multi out.
