I actually have spent over $1000 in the last month and paid for a lot of stuff that was crap.
Sorry to hear that. Maybe you could give a few examples of synths that didn't work out for you.
The 'best' will always be debated. Asking opinion is helpful for a starting point, yet it may not save you money long term.
Videos are the way forward to get the sound you need, but the synergy between the sound of an instrument and its UI can never be underestimated. It has to be experienced to be known. It has to be known to be felt if it is right for yourself.
Personally I never completely write off any synth until it has fought me enough to really say that further use or learning to master is not worth the cost in time.
The best way to save wasted money is to first learn your musical needs above all others and hunt out instruments (apps) that seem to most correspond to those needs. Beware though as our desires can so often overshadow our real musical needs. That call for something new to 'own' rather than that boring old app that we already own
There are so so many synths out there. It all depends on what area of music you are constructing? Some synths are better at making than others. Whether you make EDM, Dubstep, Chill, Ambient, etc? It all depends on your preference?
A year and a half agothis statement would have been baffling to me but since making iOS my main production platform I can believe it quite easily.
And I'm talking a G note without the cost of the iPad even factored in! We discussed here before how it's very relative, a guitar player doesn't think twice about $125 for a pedal but an amp sim app for $19.99 is steep? That's what makes it so hard to say no to the sales and brilliant sounds for a few bucks.
So many unbelievable apps I have bought and use everyday like Auria, AudioBus and about 10 to 20 synth/keys apps (Animoog, Galileo, Neo-Soul Keys, Tera Synth, Synth87, etc...) and guitar amp sims (ToneStack, AmpKit, BIAS FX) are worth their weight in gold.
But there are still folders full of synths and MIDI stuff that I just haven't gelled with, and may never. What's strange is I just like the feeling of having this arsenal of sounds, just in case. Space constraints are what finally forces a herd trimming...
Hope you guys find exactly what you're looking for in a synth, etc. They're certainly out there.
Poseidons worth a look , can do nearly anything that one
+1 for Synthmaster, it really covers all the bases quite nicely. A year or so ago, I would have recommended Alchemy, but that was a year or so ago ...
I would second this. Poseidon can achieve a massive range of sounds and textures, everywhere from powerful to delicate. You can go really deep with the programming or just push the random button until you find something close to what you need. Brilliant arpeggiator with it too.
wait a sec. You talking on iOS?
I don't have many synths. Just a few since I'm messing with soundscapes, and mangling more. But, I've used some synths in my playing around and certainly have use for a good variety.
At the moment, MitoSynth is at the top of my list. The airy, spacey sounds you can carve out of that one appeals to me. And the Viking synth is incredibly deep, especially after you layer it up in several channels within AUM.
I've only got a handful more of synths to speak of including Animoog, and a few others like Shape Synth, Synthcaster, etc. and honestly don't need much more at the moment.
That being said, I enjoyed using the new DRC synth while it was free. Ended up keeping it several more weeks without updating until I finally updated by accident and killed the trial version. No biggy since In don't need synths, but in the time I played with it, it seemed well done.
I don't have much of a background in synths, so I haven't that much to compare to, but how would DRC rank among all these "go-to" synths? It seems very full-featured, stable, great presets, builtin arpeggiator, etc. Also has all the latest tech & connectivity I believe. Maybe it's too "new" to have made anyone's "go-to/best-of" lists?
I think it's very good, but doesn't make the top 3, there's just a lot of great synths on iOS.
DRC and Viking get used more than others lately in my world.
Here in Appoholia I have a lot to choose from at this point, but the song (or the idea of a song or the dream of a song) normally makes the choice for me.
Okay here is the low down on everything I have so far. Since I play guitar too I have Bias and all the addons....as far as my production stuff I bought sunrizer and got synthmaster with the EDM packs. I also have patterning which I love, arturia ispark, samplr, thumbjam, apefilterand beathawk and i'm also considering the imini
Well, well, well...
Should’ve started with Sun-Vox.
im1 has lots of presets. Thumbjam has great presets/sounds from traditional instruments.
DRM is expensive with a small unplayable keyboard. The chords pads are a good idea but we need to resize it.I have a lot of cracked and whistling sounds even with the library presets ,i have this too with the zedsynth and synthQ. If you need a lot of presets : Thor, Im1 ,syntmaster, zeta and Arturia are the most completes. `` @JRSIV said:

Same here , i bought hundred synth and i only play a few like animoog, Tf7 ,Thor sunrizer and Im1.My iPad is full and i must delete some.So you should choose 3 or 4 good flexible synth instead of collecting all the AppStore. Icegear synth have very small size and sounds beautiful (cassini,Lorentz, laplace,Mersenne)
Wow! You are shameless.
