Xynthesizer - variable note duration or fixed?
I can't determine if I'm missing something or if Xynthesizer has fixed note durations only. I do see where you can hold notes until the next one fires, but I would like to have gaps in between some notes and not others and can't quite figure it out.
I want some short 16th notes, followed by a triplet of 8th notes with a little spacing between them. Think of the song Madness by Muse. Ba B-B-B-B-B-B Bla Bla Bla.
I already figured out how to do it in Fugue Machine, and it is very sweet. But I just bought Xynthesizer and was playing around with making it do it, but can't decide if I'm missing something or it just can't be done.

I just got Xynthesizer with the current sale, and was wondering why I can't have notes of different lengths within a sequence.
In most sequencers (as in Gadget), you can have a combination of short notes and long notes in a sequence.
But it doesn't seem you can do that in Xynthesizer, as far as I can see.
Changing the step length changes it for every hit in the whole sequence.
"Tie Notes" feature lets you make a sustained note depending on the length of consecutive hits, but this also is applied to all the notes in the sequence.
Is this how this sequencer works?
Yes this is how Xynthesizr works. You might get more varied results playing around with the tempo, but it is primarily a tone matrix for quick experimentation not a fully featured sequencer.
I have learned too after just getting Xynthesizer a few days ago, it looks like a sequencer or arrpegiator but it is its own animal.
Which is cool, it's still pretty stout where I could see a full track being done just using it for harmony & melody and adding drum machine. It's also cool as an overdub flavor to add to stuff...cool app.
Ok, thanks for letting me know!
Yeah, I bit the bullet on this as well due to the sale. Really digging it, but sure would love a gate for the notes and swing.
I'm loving it big time. I especially like to get something going that has a nice melody and/or rhythm... then block out about half of the 32 steps to randomly change, change the "A" Amp envelope to under 80 so that the attack is smoother... then feed in another smooth synth sounds via MIDI IN from an app like DRC and let it mix with the built-in sound engine. Listening exactly that right now as background.
If you haven't seen one of the devs video he's got a cool evolving demo(s). My favorite idea is cranking up the tempo and setting the number of steps to 1-4 and setting it on one of the random seeds. That makes a GREAT soundscape.
I sort of figured out a way to do what I wanted. I ended up doubling the BPM to 180bpm, expanding to 32 beats, turning on tie-notes in settings, and then creating larger spaces between the notes. Unfortunately 32 beats is a super short loop at 180bpm but it works for my limited purposes.
Yes! His demos are fantastic. His use of different step lengths is brilliant. This is from an older version of the app, but check out at around the 2:00 minute mark.
