audioshare and dropbox

I'm still trying to play the game of conserving space on my ipad. Looking at the functionality of dropbox and audioshare, once you get files into audioshare from dropbox are they brought onto your ipad or do they remain in dropbox? Would hooking up a flashdrive benefit me? I actually have tried 2 flash drives and an external hard drive and I always encd up getting errors of some sort, so if this would work in my favor are their specific flash drives that work with the ipad 2 air?

  • I'm not aware of any drives that work directly with iOS. Indirectly there are third party solutions like this...

That's the newer gen of the one I have, which has worked quite well. I see it's sold out, but there are several wireless USB hub type solutions out there.

  • is lacie fuel what you're describing? i've never tried it myself though, sorry. just remembered it.

  • Transferring stuff to Dropbox from Audioshare and visa versa only copies the item. You have to delete files.

Love Dropbox and it's a huge part of my job but 5gb isn't much and I'm too cheap to spend $99 a year for 1tb of storage.

  • Especially when a similar amount will get you a WD My Cloud or Seagate Personal Cloud, forever.

  • I have found its hard to live without with so many apps having the drop box feature

  • One of my favourite apps Documents by Readdle has a very nice feature - Dropbox folder two-way syncing. If only Audioshare had this cool feature...

    More about it here: https://helpspot.readdle.com/pdfexpert/index.php?pg=kb.page&id=484

I hope master @j_liljedahl will consider adding it :)

Ah yes, two way sync in AudioShare would be a boon.

FWIW, I've done extensive testing of document apps that claim Dropbox sync, and very few actually work as advertised. Far and away the best for syncing plain text notes is Nebulous Notes/ Permanote. The app has just been renamed to the latter, but is still available in both forms for a while.

Never had any problems with Documents by Readdle (or PDF Expert by the same company). I even use it to sync audio files, and then copy them over to other apps via 'Open in'

As for plain text notes, I prefer Editorial - it's a very nice app, has all the features I need including Markdown support and Dropbox two-way sync

  • I use Documents (Readdle) extensively too - I think it's a free app? The Dropbox sync has always worked well for me, so long as you keep the app in the foreground - probably an iOS thing. It can handle and unzip .zip files too which is very useful (downloading templates/IRs etc). I use it as my main file manager, never bother to open Dropbox itself.
To the OP, I've never tried flash drives on an iPad but you have to understand that iOS doesn't have an exposed "file system" as such, and each app is in its own restricted "sandbox" with limited abilities to access files stored elsewhere. You can't access files on a flash drive directly from iOS, like you would in Windows or OS X - you have to use an app and the app has to support accessing the flash drive (I don't know the details of how that works though...) The other thing is physically hooking up your flash drives; if you have the older lightning to USB adapter, the flash drive may require more power than the iPad can supply (and you will get errors), in which case you could try connecting both through a USB hub which has mains power connected. Or, if you have the brand new lightning to USB3 adapter, you can plug both USB devices and power at the same time which should work.
