24bit Lightning connector to lightning connector?

After playing with the evidently abandoned Drone FX app that doesn't have AB or any other way to connect it to anything or record.. figured I can just capture/record the sound via the headphone jack through some other interface with cleanish pres.

Starting wondering if there was any other way to do this from ipad to ipad/iphone in 24bit via the lightning ports only. Doesn't the lightning port carry digital audio in/out? Doesn't the iphone/ipad have a builtin DAC? So, shouldn't you be able to record a 24bit signal from once device to another? Or, would you need a separate DAC between them?

Was looking up portable DACs, but most are headphone amps and a little pricey.

And, if you could run audio from an app with no connectivity like Drone FX out in 24bit (assuming it's actually 24bit) via lightning to another iOS device ipad/iphone then record the 24bit input there using either builtin DAC or one between the devices... would you really be able to hear that significant difference from what you get going out of the headphone port?

  • Seems like this should work somehow.. but maybe the iOS pipeline is designed in a way it wouldn't work.

My guess is that the sound would be better for sure, but I'm not certain that it'd be that significant to bother with.

  • This may (or may not) help

  • @BiancaNeve That DID help. Thanks! Didn't know you could do that. I just tried it out... set up the ipad with audio midi setup, ran it into Logic Pro X, then recorded a track with Drone FX, and a second track using Noisemusick (neither of which have AB or connect/record capabilities)

Both tracks worked great and sound pretty decent too... but I'm wondering if it's actually 24bit.

I wonder if you have a second iOS device with a Lightning to USB 3 Camera Adapter , connected to another iOS device via lighting to USB... if you could do the same thing with iOS devices? ie. maybe run Noisemusick out of an iPhone lightning/USB 3 Camera adaptor, into a second iOS iPad device, and record digital right into an iOS DAW like Auria?

  • Pretty sure that's not possible I'm afraid.

Yeah, that's what I'm thinking. Although the lightning/USB3 camera kit allows you to hook up gear and harddrives, etc. I don't think you can import/export any data files that aren't an image, or video.

I played around a bit and noticed some apps produce much better sound with this method than others. The Skram app has a pretty good sounding engine running straight into Logic PRO X via this method. But Drone FX... not so much. Sounds ok.. but I doubt it sounds much better than I could get going straight out of the headphone jack.

This method is pretty cool. Thanks for turning me onto it. :)
