  • Thanks for your views. I have a sneaking suspicion that I'll get it anyway, just to feed my appoholism!

I started using reason as soon as it was released years ago, and used it all the time up to reason 4...then soon after started with the iPad...I loved and still love Reason, and I dig Figure..So I will get this..but this time I'm gonna wait about a month, just to see what happens with demos and reviews and stuff...but I have no REASON to think..no pun intended..that this will not be a great synth...The great thing about ios is that you can have em all...for the price you pay for the desktop version of just one of the stella synths you could buy a heck of alot of all these different synths on iPad..

  • I like Thor because it can be deeply programmed if you want, but has a nice and easy to understand interface to do so. Gives me the tweaking ability that Alchemy lacks, in a much easier and more iOS friendly interface than Nave. Small install size for all that power too.

I've been looking for a "go to" synth to dive in deep with, and I had hoped Nave would be it. But that ended up being too tedious for me, where as Thor fits the bill perfectly.

    Just my $.02.

  • Anyone have some .thor presets they want to zip, u/l to dropbox, and share??? : )

  • Damn, and so it continues...Dear Lord, please forgive me.I swear this will be the last synth app i'm probably buying (this month).Only one more.seriously!

How is the (Audiobus)performance compared to other synths?is it"lightweight"or does it need a lot of power?

and (slightly OT)how do i send a simple Midi start/stop message from cubasis to trigger the sequencer?I tried it with iPolysix the last days but no luck...afair the the iPoly sequencer can handle a start/stop message as well.

I wouldn't call it lightweight exactly. Thor is the first synth that's giving me quite a lot of crackles and pops on more demanding sounds like soundscape/pads stuff regardless of buffer, on my iPad 2 (outside of Audiobus). So lowering the poly nr in the keyboard window is usually a must for complex sounds. But most things do run smoothly tho, just gotta watch the nr of voices on complex presets. Dunno about the midi, it seems really basic right now (as the rest of the settings/options panel).

  • Thor is installed and waiting for me to finish figuring out Nave right after I understand Alchemy - but there must be a part of Animoog and Magellan I missed that will help shed light on these aural marvels. I also have a stack of started novels waiting to be finished.

  • So tempted.....

  • Playing around with Thor, Nice presets.
However I would like to see in next update the ability to see notes played when i hook up a external midi controller and also the ability to midi map.

  • Excellent synth and impressive iPad implementation... except has anyone else noticed that the "modwheel" sometimes stops functioning until a restart? Come, on, P-heads... you can do better than that! ;)

  • I'm getting into this synth thing (addicting), so I'm starting with some of the cheaper iPhone versions - Sunrizer is awesome, and I also grabbed Cassini (both under 5 dollars).

I want one good iPad only synth, so I was looking at the 9.99 ones. Honestly wasn't thinking about Thor (13.99) but then i got the $1 Figure app also from Propellerhead and instantly loved the sounds it offers. So Thor is a candidate, but I'm worried about slowdowns and stutter on my iPad2 (mentioned above).

If my focus is great sounding leads and bass (as opposed to ambience and bizarre noises), which would you recommend between Arctic ProSynth and Thor? (Or is there another?).

Also kind of looking for some horn and decent string sounds in a synth, so that would be a plus too. Thanks!

  • I have been asking their development team about when can we expect the next update with IAA, to date no response from them

  • Thor is amazing. There are definitely some patches that will cause problems on an iPad2. I don't recall coming across any that can't at least handle being played monophonically though. For the most part, it is completely usable on an ipad2, with decent polyphony.

Unfortunately, I consider it abandoned at this point. MIDI clock sync has been broken since day one, and as mentioned, it should have IAA support by now.

  • I really don't think it's abandoned. Some developers are just a little slow on these types of things. Has Thor even had 1 update yet? Hasn't even been out a year yet - so why would they abandon a popular and successful app? Propellerheads have always been quiet about updates and new releases - for all we know a big update could be on App Store tomorrow (and an ios version of Reason too!).

  • It's at 1.01- the first update came almost immediately IIRC, and that was like 9 months ago.

Yeah, wasn't Thor a June 2013 release? Granted, we've had iOS 7 since then (I think), but provided that everything still works, and it's not riddled with glitches and poor performance, I can't say it's fair to call it "abandoned".

Heck, MultiTrack DAW hasn't been revised since December 2012 but still works (and now there is finally an update in the works for it).

The roll-out of AudioBus (and, to a lesser degree, Inter-App Audio) sparked a great deal of update activity in apps that otherwise may not have been revised. For a growing subset of iOS musicians, AudioBus became a necessary tool, and apps that failed to get on the Bus are derided as toys or novelties. I actually think this is a little unfair because there are times I prefer AudioCopy/Paste over AudioBus, but still.

Yeah, Thor is scaring me a bit. File size is reasonable (47.1 MB) but if there's too much going on under the hood, that's a problem for my iPad. May try some other ones first.

  • Figure got an update out of the blue after around a year. I think they'll get around to a Thor update, if not as soon as we'd like.
