Gadget Update and NanoKONTROL Studio

edited April 2016 in General App Discussion

Happy Korg fixed an issue about nanoKONTROL, as mine will arrive next week as my birthday present. :)

    .

  • I'm still anxiously awaiting the nanoKEY Studio controller. I was hoping that the update notes for this update would have given a tipoff as to an expected release date. I know KORG said they are shooting for a June sales date, but I keep checking the online stores daily, just in case.

  • I got the NanoKONTROL yesterday. It is completely plug-and-play as far as Gadget goes. You don't even have to pair it with your iPad in settings. If bluetooth is on, Gadget will recognize it and you pair with one button push. Then Gadget works perfectly.

Auria is a different story. I set it up in ProTools mode by holding down scene and rewind buttons when I turned it on. After many tries I was able to get Auria to find it in settings. But I couldn't get it to work. After maybe a dozen tries I was able to pair with Auria Pro through Bluetooth. It worked pretty well, but it wasn't as smooth as Gadget, and it disconnected shortly after. I've never been able to reconnect it since.

As the USB connection doesn't work I've ordered the new Apple powered one, as that's something I wanted anyway. We'll see how that goes.

I am most likely going to return this.

When you say it works perfectly, do you mean it controls Gadgets mixer and transport sections?

For 8 channels fader, solo, mute, pan for each of the 8 channels
Transport: Play, Stop, Record and Cycle Buttons

I wasn't able to make the knobs control CC messages on the synths.

MIDI CC control on other apps was also not good

Now that's something else I have to buy.

  • Thanks for the feedback Reid. Top fellow.

  • @AndyE I'd really hope I can make it work with Auria Pro so I can keep it. It comes with this massive software package I'd like to play with.

  • I picked this up a week or so ago. discussed here and on the auria site:

  • I don't think this is going to work out for me. I wanted something that was wireless. It's ridiculous that it would eed two power sources to work. I can plug my unpowered Alesis keyboard directly into my iRig and into my iPad and run Auria Pro with no problem. Likewise my first generation nanoKontrol. But not at the same time.

What I need is something to plug in both of them at the same time. The only thing I've seen on this board doesn't work on an iPad two. Anybody know an inexpensive multi-USB hookup that works with an iPad 2?
Should I be getting an iConnect MIDI product or something? Which one?

  • As we speaking about Korg Gadget, is this perhaps the developerteam from Korg?

Or, is it a bunch of japaneese youngsters with a nice haircut... ;-)

  • @JP-08 Followed your example and got a powered USB and a new Apple camera connector. Auria works great. I'm keeping the nanoKONTROL!

  • For any of you who are thinking of getting the NanoKONTROL Studio, it comes with a pretty decent software package. I've had a chance to install and play with some of the apps, and there is a lot of useful stuff in there for those of you who still work on your computer now and than and are looking for more VSTs for your DAWs.

The thing that really knocked me out was something called STRUM SESSION. Imagine a modeling guitar app that came with 500 strum variations in various styles and BPMs. The strum variations come in sets of 7 that you can trigger by pressing piano keys at the bottom and top ends of the keyboard. There's also a more expensive version which is $100 more and has 700 loops and a lot more guitars.

That's what it does in its loop mode, but it also has a Guitar mode where it will take your piano chords and revoice them so they sound like they would on a guitar.

I'm a guitarist but I am fascinated with iPad guitar apps for some reason. I think it's because I love them on the iPad so much that I can't stop playing with this thing.

If you're curious, you can get a free demo version of the app here. It comes in a bundle with a synth VST and an electric piano VST.

Anyway if you're considering the nanoKONTROL and have a Mac or PC, this is something that makes it a better deal IMHO.
