Anyone using Noatikl and/or Mixtikl ?

  • That's another thing that bugs me about intermorphic, ie. makes of Mixtikl, etc. I paid for Mixtikl 3 (I think) then had to pay again for version 5, then pay again for version 6. However, if I want to take advantage of their bundle, I'd have to buy Mixtikl 7 at full price with no credit at all for the 3 versions of Mixtikl I've already paid for.

Doesn't that sound a bit lame? I know many here want to support the devs, but seriously?

No.. I think I'll pass for now. Will be interested in how you @carol get on with intermorphic, but the more I think about it, the more apprehensive I get to part with any more cash.

  • (not to derail, but… ) Does anyone use Quincy?

  • Only for particularly difficult to solve crimes :)

No I think I'd probably feel the same . I have quite few apps that were replaced by new paid versions , which is fair enough if it's a major update , or it's been a few years since the first one . I'm new to this dev though so I don't know how regularly they do this . The version of Mixtikl I have though seems to work fine , even though it's no longer supported so hopefully if I buy Noatikl it'll carry on working for a while after they replace it with v4 . Don't think I'll bother with the bundle though .

I am mainly using Noatikl, and found it is very rewarding to dive deeper into its sometimes complicated-like system. It is core to my setup, sending midi to various synths/effects simultaneously (ifretless, Cyclop, Turnado, Sector, etc.). It takes some time to understand the inner workings of ambient/fixed pattern etc., but I have found some magical ways to put it to work... . All the sounds then go into Logic for panorama-routing/live-eqing/master effects, and then further looped into VDMX for audioreactive videotriggering (almost like the suggestion of @hellquist, but all is realtime-configurable and -adjustable). I looove to be surprised by the algorythms I programmed into Noatikl, and it does make a great job at this... . The forums do seem like an empty room somehow, though, and there's not too many videos to cover the workings. I found Noatikl much easier to manipulate to my liking, compared to Mixtikl (easier to get to, and change, parameters that define the overall sound). I encourage everyone to play around with these! (not, if you want something to sound exactly like what you have in your mind beforehand, though, it will colour the output with a special tan everytime...!)
    Cheers, t

Mixtikl has put me off a bit, but I think Notakil sounds more to my taste , and what you're doing sounds similar to how I'd use it .

Do you have any tracks online I could hear ? Might inspire me to part with my money today !!

There's some aggregates at my website: tobiasrobens.com/101/animalaleman

    Or vimeo: vimeo.com/animalaleman

All my works are pretty experimental, though. Don't expect pop!
    Hope you enjoy, cheers, t

Cool stuff! I'm also interested in the VDMX software you're using. It's a bit pricey for playing around with and I know there's a free demo with no saving... but do you know of other video triggering by audio programs that are less dense? Or, maybe an interesting module for FCPX that does some of the basics? Or, maybe something like SunVox but for audio/video triggering?

There's a few other ones, but the cheaper ones (CoGe, AV Mixer) I'm not sure do audioreactive stuff. Then there's the big ones: Motion Dive Tokyo, Resolume, Modul8, but I think they're all about as pricey as VDMX. VDMX has a "starving artist"price, though... .

It's been years since I really looked around (before ios), to find something for multimedia projections including the audience via remote triggers (WII, for example), and I did play around with a few, but VDMX really is king, in my view, with the Quartz Composer integration and all... . When I was looking for a clue, it was also one of the cheepest options around.

There's pages, though, like http://www.vjsmag.com, where you can find stuff (also for windows).

Concerning Noatikl and update-pricing: I think it's more than fair to pay again after two years or so..., think about it. And they have been pretty busy with updates (free ones), through the years.

    All the best, cheers, t

  • Yeah sounds fair enough :)) Looking forward to getting the app tonight

I wouldn't have minded paying an "upgrade" price to Mixtikl 7, but they didn't do that. They require you to buy it at full price all over again with no credit at all for the 3 full versions you've already paid for. I don't think that's so "fair".

Regarding the VJ software.. yeah, it looks like even at full price VDMX is the least expensive for that sort of thing. Looks like it's fairly bloated with way more than I want though. Was hoping for a scaled down, less complicated, novice version. ;)

  • ...and: there's "generate" for the iPad, but I didn't dig into this one too much yet...

  • @skiphunt: the cool thing about VDMX is the scalability to your needs, you just see the modules you need, other stuff also doesn't charge the CPU. But maybe that's not what you mean... .

I looked at a couple quick demo vids on YouTube.. but the dudes were kind of the VJ "showing off" "too cool for school" types... so they were showing their setup with every possible module they could cram onto the screen.

Will give it another look. thanks

And "generate" for iPad... I don't see anything other than one for iPhone. It says it has a setting for "audio reactivity" between the video and filters. Is that what you're referring to? If so, looks like it's only iPhone.

  • @carol @skiphunt : let me know, when you have something online somewhere, or send me something. I NEVER find people that are interested to do things at all similar (musicians don't wanna deal with visuals, vjs don't care about audio-). Really, I am very much interested in what others come up with!

  • Yeah, sorry, generate is for iphone, but works just as well on the pad..., and the cool mfs showing off..., I know what you're talking about (made me have a sad smile)

VDMX has some pretty good demovids on their website, for different setups:
www.vidvox.com , and then somewhere at the bottom of the page it says "tutorials"

I've been interested for a long time. I only recently started getting proactive about it. I've been a photographer/film/video person for 30 years. I've been obsessively trying to get up to speed with some interesting audio soundscape compositions for the last 3 months and I'm only just now starting to like what I'm getting.

Still very primitive at this point and haven't bothered messing with any video to mix with audio (until my audio gets better)

Here's my soundcloud stuff that I just make a still to go with the soundscape. It's all very much my "learning" attempts... but it's gradually getting there I think: https://soundcloud.com/skiphunt

Several months ago I was thinking of some concept regarding perception of reality and just did a weird, layered mix with some slo-no water.. nothing special, but it set me off trying to learn more: http://skiphuntphoto.com/wonder/thinking-a-lot-lately-about-omnipresence-of-mind

I didn't know about this one. The videos I found all sound pretty percussive, can it do Ambient stuff, too?

  • omnipresence of mind, I like that a lot. The piece I like, too. It could profit from audioreaction, though IMHO.... . Just listening to your soundcloud, nice sounds, keep it up, man! There's great subtle frequency-shifts (I personally looove these things) going on-

This is my current Soundcloud project : https://soundcloud.com/terrible-void - which is basically live jams in aum in desolate drone - type arenas . I think using Noatikl to power my usual synth setup ( Cyclop , Poseidon , Thor etc. ) would add a bit more interest and structure . At the moment I'm too busy twiddling the synth controls to concentrate on the notes lol so Noatikl would free me up to concentrate on the sounds themselves . I dont have any videos up yet but I plan to do some visuals for these tracks as they will probably work well as soundtracks

  • @carol : nice (hope that's not taken wrongly, since the sounds are weird -in the best way). Good stuff, thanks for posting!

    Thanks both !!

  • @u0421793 @animal
I like how Quincy's algos work. It is based on the very same concept of Xynthesizer but for a reason or another the results I can get are more musical if I still don't understand the relationship between the grid and the notes played. Not so stable and the interfaces is not the easiest to get around tho. Loaded with some kind of useless GM sounds and only one midi channel out

  • See my SOTMC entry for this month, created in Noatikl (V3) from an existing preset that I altered to my taste and then reworked subsequently on the desktop - but only regarding filterings and spatial stuff. The 'core' of it is a live capture from Noatikl into Audioshare.

  • Just noticed that all the intermorphic apps are now updated with 'improved thumbnail jiggling behaviour', now that's what I like to see :)

Seriously though, it's great to see updates nonetheless -including the under-the-hood bug fixes.

I've had some fun with Notikl , a bit frustrating at times but it sounds great powering the new Moog app

  • I was interested in getting these. Can anyone tell me if there's some kind of set cycle to the version life? Annually? I noticed that both of these were released on 11/18/15 and I don't want to get them only to feel like I might need to buy again 2 months from now.
