Gadget Tips and Tricks [Was: Does Gadget have a snap-to-grid function in the sequencer?]
As the title says, does Gadget have a snap-to-grid function in the sequencer when drawing parts? I can't seem to find a way to do it, and it is difficult to get things exact. Thanks!
[Edit: There have been so many useful tips posted, that this page is worth bookmarking. And since it is worth bookmarking, we might as well get as many tips as possible!]

With 'Quantize' enabled the events you draw will snap to the grid.
Press Function to adjust the grid size.
Thanks guys!!!
OK, I have another question for you experts: Is there a way to reset automation to default settings? I can draw automation, but let's say I screw up majorly, and want to just reset the automation. Is there a way to do it, or do I have to painstakingly try to re-draw everything back to default? I can't seem to find any documentation on this.
Also, are there any links to tutorials, tips&tricks, etc that you know? Thanks again!
You can just swipe left on the parameter name and press the red X to delete automation.
No need to 're-draw' things back to default'.
There are at least a few dozen vid on YouTube...
...but then again part of the fun with Gadget is to figure out how things work or throw in a question or two here
I just found the answer myself. Slide the name of the automation channel to the left and you reveal a red square with an X in it. I will leave the rest to your feverish imaginations
Once again, you guys are awesome!! Thank you!!!
if you strike the right sequence of notes on the Marseilles marimbas, you get to view a pokemon playing a keytar (but only for a brief, brief moment).
I have a question while we're on the topic, how do I get the recording countdown to always be on? It seems to pop up whenever it wants. Link is disabled.
Good question!!!
To get the countdown to always happen, press the song's Stop button twice, resetting the playhead.
I'm bookmarking this thread!
Because of how useful this post has been, I'm turning this page into a tips and tricks page. Please post all useful tips and tricks that you know! Thanks!
I'm sure a lot of you know this, but I just found it so maybe this will help some, you can record the turning of any synth knob. No need to draw automAtions
I didn't know that!!! Good one!!
Meaning that you can record the automation instead of drawing it?
Yes. And the knobs will move on their own accordingly.
Uh. I was hoping of some kind of magic trick to do I-dunno-what. This has always been a pretty obvious function to me and I was going to say/think RTFM, but before shouting out some harsh post had a check in the manual myself and I actually couldn't see any kind of reference to it in the manual.
So it definitely is the trick of the year
The manual IS pretty sparse. There's lots of things that I wish were in it.
This thread rocks! Thanks for making it @Audiojunkie
I will have some questions very soon. ONce I dive into it again.
Yeah, I saw the value in it when I decided to book mark it for later reference. I then thought: We need more tips and tricks, because I'm sure there are a lot more of them around!!! I just hope that those who have learned some of the application's secrets will be willing to share them!
I hope that those who have learned any secret realize that it is actually a secret for some other out there(see me and the automation recording thing) edit:
Ok here's another one that took some stumbling around for me to realize. When you want to copy midi to another bar within a track, you don't have to use the select box to drag and select the midi UNLESS you are only copying a PART of the midi within the bar. If you are just copying the whole bar, simply toggle the selector box on (don't actually drag with it) and hit the function button, then copy.
Oops it's much more simple, just hit function, copy in the piano roll.
Hint: if you get something going on a scene or a gadget but you want to make some edits to notes/automations/whatsoever DUPLICATE! If you mess up you will have still the old copy. Always take your time before deleting something.
You can record notes and automation over multiple scenes.
Just make lots of scenes, start at the first one, hit record, and if loop is switch off you can record many minutes of playing and/or knob tweaking.
Then you can go back and decide on your best scenes (tidy them up) and delete the others.
Expert! Catch you later, going to sleep now, good night.
Quantise works in regard to automation curves as well as notes. (Certainly when drawing in - not sure about recording knob tweaking in).
This means if you want to have very 'stepped' automation (e.g. exactly half a bar with your LFO at 1/8 and half a bar with your LFO at 1/16) setting the grid to half bars and turning quantisation on then drawing in automation lines helps a lot.
Turn the limiter off - it's terrible.
Beware the 'mono-phonic' nature of some Gadgets.
For instance Tokyo's bass drum is a good example of this. Give it a long delay and play it in quick succession and you'll notice a nasty click when it re-triggers. This is because it won't play two hits at the same time, it cuts the first off (abruptly with a click) when you trigger the second.
Solution = make two instances of Tokyo.
Other gadgets that have this issue include Bilbao (same sample), Abu (same sample), Dublin, Berlin. If you are getting clicks on retriggers then consider making a second instance.
