Auria Pro: Fabfilter IAP real world performance question(s)

I'm tempted to purchase a few of the FF IAPs in Auria but I'm struggling to find much information about how much strain they'd put on my iPad mini 4.

I have used Pro-C 2, Pro-Q 2, Timeless, Volcano & Saturn on my OSX set up, so I know that, for example, Pro-C 2 is unbelievably light on resources with a 2012 i7 MBP Retina....trouble is, it's very hard to find performance comparisons between OSX & iOS.

Could any FF/Auria users offer some insight on how quickly Pro-C 2, Pro-Q 2 and Saturn would bring my iPad crashing to a halt (using audio tracks rather than loads of IAA synths, btw)..

  • My general musical experience is limited, but I find that Saturn is a real CPU hog, and Timeless can be too. Pro-MB takes its toll, but the others are pretty good. I must say they are all wonderful however. I was using them on a Mini 2 before I bought an iPad Pro. I still find myself freezing tracks even on this set up, especially if I have midi tracks present. Haven't regretted them, and have just bought Pro-G with my pocket money

  • Yeah, Pro-MB & Saturn could be a bit heavy in Logic too. Really, I'm most interested in C 2 & Q 2, which definitely seemed the lightest on resources in the desktop versions. Whichever way I look at it, the prices are a bargain & having such top-quality plugins ported to my tiny iPad is pretty amazing ;)

I've found the newer Q2 is lighter on resources than Pro Q was. On a recent project I had 4 or 5 instances of Q2 along with Microwarmer running and my CPU was only 10-12%. In the past I've added Saturn or Timeless to a similar configuration without too much of a hit (15-20%). I'm usually using 16+ tracks and try to avoid having to freeze until I'm close to final mixdown. I use the built in PSP channel strips for most of my heavy lifting as far as EQ and compression go, and that allows one to save resources. Adding Pro-L to my typical setup usually takes me up to the 30-40% range.

I have most of the FabFilter plugins, but I always buy them on sale, which seems to happen around twice a year.

I'm on an Air 1, 9.3 - hope this helps!

  • It all helps! What device are you running that on?

  • Yeah, realized I left of my system first time around - Air 1, 9.3, in case you missed the edit. I also use mostly audio tracks

Ooh...that looks like they'll run smoothly on my mini 4. And Pro, when I finally cave in to my urge to buy one ;)

  • I feel ya. Oh so pretty, Apple Pencil, 256 storage, 4gb RAM, etc. To the point I've found myself avoiding my local Apple Store like a recovering alcoholic tries to avoid old watering holes ... Doesn't stop the endless feeling of "NEED." :sunglasses:

  • 1.) Turn off HQ mode in any FF plugins that have it on if using live
2.) When using the plugins to mix post-recording, set a high buffer size in AP.

  • Loaded many (20+) instances of Q2 on my Air2 okay. Sorry, it was a quick test, but i can return to it if need be.

That's impressive! Def going to purchase Q2 then ;)

  • Bumping this, rather than starting a new Auria-based thread....

I purchased Pro-Q2, Pro-C2 & PSP Echo and am now running them on an iPad Pro 12.9". All good. Make that "excellent".

So, now I'm bitten by the IAP bug, trying to work out which elements are slightly lacking in Auria. Will probably get Volcano to sort out filters, but reverb is the real priority. Is the Classicverb Pro IAP much cop? The standard built-in version is a little lifeless, and there's practically no way of finding out what it sounds like (NB: Apple have ceased my refund option, so I have to be extra cautious with purchases).

Would the MoReVox IRs be a better option? I was in the process of converting and importing all my Space Designer IRs...sadly, that's turned out to be a bit unreliable, behaviour-wise. I'd prefer an algorithm-based reverb, but there's only Classicverb Pro for that, so convolution it is. And, despite Convolution Reverb's frustrating lack of in-depth editing, I'd be happy enough if the MoReVox stuff offered a quality range of plates, halls & springs.

Any advice from users would - as always - be welcome!

Depends what your looking for in a reverb. Me personally I have no problem using a IAA as my Reverb because I swear by amazing noises Gliderverb, Reverb and AUFX: Space.

Main benefit of ClassicVerb Pro is that it has tone cotnrols. However I tend to use the convolution reverb more, but usually with EQ either before or after it in the chain. You can EQ your reverb on the AUX send in Auria Pro which makes the convolution reverb usable IMO, to see how it's done see the first page of this thread:

As for extra IR packs, the GoldenGlue is the one I like best. All the IAP IRs are all synthetic though, created with gear rather than being sampled from natural spaces, it would be nice if some real spaces were available via IAP.

  • @richardyot I completely forgot to mention that I'm more interested in synthetic reverbs than natural spaces. I'm a big fan of the artificial reverbs of the 90s, as used extensively on early B12, Autechre, Bola, etc., records.

@PsYAuM Although I do have AUFX Space, I'm trying to get away from the somewhat unpredictable IAA problems, as well as the one-instance limitation.

I wish that Auria....or even any app developer....would offer something that sounds as fantastic as Valhalla's VSTs. Their modulation options make a world of difference.

You could probably do some cool stuff with a daisy-chained AUX send, with the convolution reverb being modulated by Volcano for instance.

Prefer 2CAether or Blackhole myself but wouldn't say no to Valhalla or Toraverb for that matter. TBH though I think where pissing in the wind asking for something as good sounding as those being available on IOS just yet, but we can all live in hope.

  • Valhalla's Ubermod is my reverb / multi-tap effect of choice on the desktop. It can create sounds that I haven't heard other FX do (for a very reasonable price), it would indeed be most cool on iOS / in Auria :)

  • I've used the HITS and Golden Glue IR packs in Auria's Convolution Reverb quite a bit. I'm very happy with both packs and that reverb in general :+1:

You are the guy who appreciate the details ....

I just have no such experience to choose what from what in them! Obvious, they are pro level.

LOL, nah, I just scroll through the list until I find something I like - fortunately, there's a lot in both of those packs to like
