  • @crouchie Good Song. As much as some people do not like to admit, once you are a soldier for some years, you are forever a soldier. It gives you a different outlook and world view on life. It leaves a lasting impression on your soul.

I like the mellow feel and general vibe of the song. It was easy to listen to in its entirety.

Thank u. That is not my background but it must be a transforming experience, and I have the greatest respect for the sacrifices those people make. Glad u liked it.

@crouchie, wonderful tune. I love the way the different instruments are running different rhythms, but keeping it together at the same time, one of my favourite things in music. Voice is spot on, love the lyrics. Those two little breaks are at just the right time. Don't know why you dislike the ending, I thought it worked very well.

Thanks Rick. I just felt the end would benefit from a bit more love and attention, but it just gets to the point where u need to cut and run. V kind review, thank u.

I have always found the hardest thing in any of my creative endeavours is to decide it's finished, and doesn't need another 2 weeks of dicking around.

  • @crouchie I think it's a great vocal, both in terms of melody and performance, and I can only assume that your friend meant that you sound like Dave Gahan, rather than the whole of the eighties. Maybe you're from Basildon? I think it's the accent as much as the voice :)

I also like the sparse electronic backing, it lets the vocal take centre stage, and the overall structure is pretty good, until it gets to the end where I feel there is too much repetition and it does kind of fizzle out. It would have been good to hear some more progression, maybe a slight increase in the vibe/feel/intensity. But it's a good song, all it needs is a little more love in terms of arrangement and production IMO.

I think this is probably one of the best vocals you've done, for me it's got just the right tone, not over-dramatic but still with a lot of feeling.

  • A little song I wrong for my wife on Mother's Day. Not sure if I would have time the rest of the month to do a studio version so I am going to post the Youtube Video I did. Thanks for Watching.

I really like this! I love how the timing slips and gives it a great laid back, grunge, stoner groove. If the timing slip is intentional then it's genius, if not, then, well, it's genius! Much, much better than last month. Double track vocals massive improvement. Ok, so it gets a bit too disjointed in places, and I might have preferred it if the brass has carried a bit more of a solid melody to just tie it together a little, but you've stripped the arrangement back, made it clearer and I'm won over. Nice one

Same track as last month but finished and pretty different thanks to feedback here.

I think this hangs together much better, feels more complete and, well, mature than last month. I get lost in the rhythm still, but much more pleasantly. I love how the different loops sit so well together and greatly envy your musical know how. It's definitely a Gadget track, got that sound. The only complaint I have is a taste one: I just find the chime/lead sound that runs through the track a little shrill and a bit obvious, but that's just me and isn't a true criticism. You've mixed it nicely too so (with my novice ears) I don't hear any clashing/muddiness. Great stuff, well done

Here's my own for this month:

    All the best,
    Dimitri.

Oh Dimitri, you are in a completely different league to me in all things musical and I am always in awe of your talent. I just didn't really go for the main hook of this song, bit too poppy and trite. But the breakdowns are great. I love your stuff so much more when it is a bit dark, edgy, a bit of a jazz feel you know. I mean no disrespect, this is just a taste thing. The arrangement and production is excellent as always. There is some distortion on some of the crashes particularly at the end, but I don't know if that is a Soundcloud streaming artefact, most likely is. Will u be able to restrict yourself to one tune a month..?

    P ;-)

I'm back with a song of the month after taking a break for the last two. No apps, no synths, just rock this time:

Thought you were channeling your inner Arctic Monkey at the start there, was waiting for Alex Whatshisname to kick off. It's a great tune, really well mixed I think, good hook and vocals/lyrics. You don't need the synths etc eh? Suggestions...? Well maybe you could build the vocal more at the end. I can imagine more voices at the end just giving it a bit more oomph, just some backing, and would give it a crescendo that would really finish it off well. Great stuff though. Wow, good tunes from people this month!

Thank you so much, @crouchie! Perhaps the artifacts are browser-related? I fail to notice them here, either through speakers or phones. And no, I cannot help it I will be making more songs this month (but won't post them here). In fact, I already made a new one, check this link out: https://forum.audiob.us/discussion/13491/my-new-song-humanos#latest

Thanks. I'm much happier with it.

  • @crouchie Hit me with a 60t Challenger tank crouchie! I served 16 years & it bought back some vivid memories. I get it. The line "Shadow boxing flashbacks" is deep, meaningful & incredibly powerful. So well summarised in those few words. Brilliant.

The slower pace has allowed us to fully appreciate your vocal prowess. You are a very good singster & have already demonstrated how easily you can turn your skills to different styles & genres successfully. I know you said "don't ask" but that's a red flag to a bull for me. I hope it all gets sorted one way or t'other for you. Bands eh!

Love the gentleness to the musical work underneath & highlights the reflective quality I absorb from it. I can't add much about the music because most of my senses were constantly drawn to your vocal & the story. The very last "clap" reminded me of the heart sinking, blood draining "click" moment when you realise your mag is empty. Very apt. In more ways than one.

I will give the lads a listen at this years Regimental reunion. I can guarantee, it won't only be me that "feels" it. Fabulous stuff. Congratulations on a top, emotional piece of creativity.

Really kind of u, thank u. Not going to pretend I have ever been in the forces myself, but the stories are out there and I meet a few people like this in my line of work. V proud to hear u may play it to others, appreciate that.

sim working with an ipad mini one, its slower than the newer ones obviously so you can imagine how important cpu is. ive started tracking everything like busses auxillaries even channels with any eq or compression i track back on to a stereo track. i know it sounds like a lot to do but it saves my ass alot in my limited cpu world

  • thanks . i hopemit helps someone out. woild have helped me out two years ago

  • I'm guessing you don't get too many country ballads posted here so we thought we would try one. Mostly written by my wife and I also got her to play some piano this month. Also we got a new microphone so I would especially welcome comments on the vocals.

  • @orchardman She's got a fine clear voice, the 'sound' -however much that's too do with the mic- feels very close. It does sound a little separate or 'on top' of the mix to me....the song is nice enough, but the end (again to me) feels like it peters out and while it's full of a certain and of tired longing, I wish I could hear another 10 per cent of that in the voice. I'm guessing in the end this is very much personal taste. I want my broken-hearts to really sound broken. This is perhaps an area where the very clarity of the delivery works in opposition to, but, again again, that's hugely subjective...

  • @orchardman sounds great .goodjobon tracking the piano , your wifes vocals sound great thru thatnew microphone congratulations,

  • A quick song I made.

I liked his a lot. Listening on a Sunday morning with a bit of a hangover with this song buzzing through my head. Only slight criticism is that I would have liked that screaming guitar at the end to turn into a longer psychedelic lead break. Good stuff.

nicely produced piece. I always struggle to provide any relevant criticism for this type of music because electronic instrumentals are not my sought of thing.

Great song. You can't beat a bit of punky pop when you are sitting on a Sunday morning with a hangover. Vocals had a Buzzcocks sort of feel to them which I really liked.

I must caution you to remember that I write a lot of fiction:

Not an easy piece to criticise. Not sure about the child like voice at the very start and I wanted the melodic outro to develop for longer. I could see this as great introduction to a much longer piece.

  • @crouchie said:

Never sure about the slow ones, but in the interest of variety I persevere. One day I'll be happy with one. I listen to a lot of music, but like many I'm sure, quite a narrow selection. This was initially called Lonely Soldier, and it was inspired by a two word sample in a Meat Beat Manifesto tune of the same name. I wrote the lyric and melody for the band I am/was in (don't ask) and felt v pleased with myself until I looked up Lonely Soldier and found there were lots of songs with the same sodding name. Hence it became "He's forever a soldier" and I'm sticking with that so there.

The end is a bit messy but I got fed up and just mixed it down. I'm not renowned for my patience and needed to move on. No EQing this month I tell you, goodness me no! This was done almost exclusively in Auria Pro, with just a simple beat from Patterning. Modstep continues to stare accusingly at me from my iPad, grumbling with AUM and muttering about what exactly I think I'm going to do with Blocs Wave and Samplr now I've started filling the credit card up. I'm not going to buy that Moog thing, really I'm not...

Anyway, hope u don't find it too tedious. My mate said I have a "very 80s voice" when I made him endure a couple of my recordings. He will be sadly missed.

Lovely song with a great vocal. Not sure it needed all the electronic twiddley bits.

Rock and roll man, although Mother's Day is a different date here in the Uk so it's a bit late for us. Loving the hat.

  • @gmslayton lovely idea to record something for your wife on Mother's Day, hope she appreciated the sentiments .

@orchardman nice tune, your wife has a lovely voice. Found it a little one paced and the fuzz guitar seemed a bit out of place ( but it worked well in that Carpenters song I forget the name of, so what do I know :) ) overall it was well played and I enjoyed it.

@Dounstar I thought it would make a great backing track to an animation piece, made me think of hundreds of little moogs marching through a city intent on sonic destruction with the swooping lines representing a squadron of airborne moogs flying overhead.
I like things that fire my imagination, so thanks for that.

Thank you so much for the feedback. If only I knew animators that could make it a reality.
