  • We just had a good discussion on Discord about VU meter gainstaging (like this )

It would be great to get big visual VU meters on iOS that we can calibrate.

    Ok, I’ll bite.

Why is it so important? Nothing except the master out will ever clip in the host. Some plugins will distort when pushed hard, but no detailed metering is needed to prevent that. In the digital domain, Simply pulling down the master fader accomplishes exactly the same thing as all the gain staging one could ever do

Are people still mired in the limitations of analog hardware consoles that no longer exist in 32 bit or better digital processing? Or, is there some legitimate need for this other than eye candy and OCD?

Don’t get me wrong, some casual level of gain staging is just good practice, but obsessing about it is just silly as far as I can see.

Hey, don’t diminish the value of eye candy and OCD! 😆

Well, the discussion we had was around the benefit getting your faders at zero at dawn so you really see any moves you make in the mix. The consensus was that the nice visual VU meters help get you there to unity the easiest.

I’m interested to hear what others have to say as gainstaging is not something I have found super easy on iOS.

  • Here’s another good reference

  • This one is so pretty to look at I want it on my iPad and iPhone :)

It's also got a quite nice gain adjustment to match a set target level...
