seems to be both a midi looper and a step sequencer. any gotchas you're aware of?

It is very sweet. I just wish I could get it to recieve midi clock or iaa sync from Studiomux.

(looks longingly towards Master Kaikoo sitting on his throne of apps)

i see. does it send a reliable midi clock? it seems Link is not supported (at the moment?)...

    Hmmm, I am not sure.

Hi, just drop by and see this thread. Thank you.

I must inform, any sequencers for recording mdi purposes should not have Ableton Link on 'ON'.

However, if you do live show playing, you surely can use Ableton Link to match all apps/hardware/computers for easy going.

Oh, yes! clock is excellent on midiSTEPs, love it.

Are you able to get Midisteps starting and stopping with Studiomux?

    Anyone knows about this?

  • With MIDI clock coming from an PC DAW via Studiomux, it works for me.
(I haven't tested from another App running on the same iPad though)

    Maybe obvious, but ~
You have to make sure Studiomux sync is set to MIDI and that the DAW is sending MIDI clock to the Studiomux port. Also you have to turn on 'receive clock' in MIDIsteps accessed by tapping on the tempo display.

  • One of my favorite apps. I haven't tried it with Studiomux but its MIDI clock has been very reliable for me otherwise.

It is a indeed a "MIDI Looper", of sorts, but it's not like a standard audio looper or Infinite Looper where what you play in is what you hear coming back out of it just like you played it. Instead, each note (or chord) you play in comes back out as a note but fixed to the step length/clock. You could wait 10 minutes between entering the 15th and 16th note in a 16 step sequence and when you play it back, they'll come out right next to each other. It's meant to mimic (and greatly extend) the sequencer on the Roland SH-101 and similar.

LINK is likely to be added some time after June. The developer is waiting for the big Apple developer conference to make sure Apple isn't going to come out with a competing standard.

There's tons and tons of info on the forum already about midiSteps: https://www.google.com/search?q=midisteps+site:forum.audiob.us.

  • it's a very fun app - great to just throw in a bunch of notes and send to different synths and see what happens. Random feature is good too - keep hitting that until you get a bar - or half a bar sequence you like and then tweak a few more notes. I find it's great for coming up with lines/grooves you wouldn't normally play or sequence with other sequencers.

Studiomux recieves midi clock from my PC DAW and relays it to FugueMachine and Patterning which start and stop properly. Midisteps just sits there though... maybe because it does not support IAA sync?

  • @AudioGus Strange, it works fine here. (iPad air 8.4.1 / PC running Cubase 7)

I have to start Studiomux first in order to have the ports visible to MIDIsteps.
Also, I have to manually select Studiomux as MIDI input source upon each launch. (settings/midi in port)

That's probably worth checking just in case? I don't think IAA sync should really make any difference if you choose MIDI sync in Studiomux and are clocking from external MIDI anyway.

  • How is Midisteps compared to Chordpolypad cause i can't choose between them both. Is there one more powerfull or deeper? What are the differences ? I need a good randomizer and they have both.

  • They're very different. One is a step sequencer and the other is a sort of chord utility/controller. YouTube videos would give you a better idea than I can:

  • Ok Sorry , i thought there was a sequencer option or an Arp in CPP like in navichords but it s just a good midi chords controller.Nevermind Midisteps looks pretty good.

  • StepPolyArp, ChordPolyPad's sibling, might warrant a closer comparison to midiSTEPS. Still very different. Both are cool.
