iPad Air 3 Rumors Legit? (Q4 of 2016, 3GB RAM)
We in the iOS music production niche were a bit disappointed in the 9.7 Pro's 2GB of RAM huh?
Well, I know I'm not the only one who follows the tech news sites and gets email updates, etc. Since it's release there's been chatter about the Pro 9.7 being a stopgap so Apple could have a new tablet debut & service those who wanted Pencil support and other Pro benefits without the huge screen real estate.
The Air branding not going away and another tablet release in 2016 are the other speculations seen alot. Well now there finally seems to be something a bit more concrete to back up the rumors. The Chinese tech blogs are mentioning rumblings from Foxconn about new tablet production for Apple either underway or slated to begin.
This one at: http://wap.ithome.com/html/223648.htm (you'll have to Google translate it from Chinese)
and an American tech site at:
http://wccftech.com/ipad-air-3/
both have reports of an iPad Air 3, slated for 4th quarter 2016 release, with 3 to 4 GB of RAM, and an upgraded chip set possibly the A10 which would also be in the iPhone 7 expected to be released with the Air 3.
It would have the four speaker set up and anti reflective screen as on the Pro's, an increased screen resolution but would not have Pencil or Keyboard support.
The idea seems to be to market the iPads similarly as they do the MacBooks, with a Pro line and an Air line.
Still unsubstantiated rumors at this point but the sources are the same ones who correctly identified the then possible but now standard specs of the last three iDevice release cycles. Something to think about...an Air 3 with even just 3GB RAM and the new chip set would make me feel very good about resisting the temptation of the 9.7 Pro.
Be cool...

I'm probably wrong / but always thought Ram increases always double. So 2-4-8-16-32-64-128 etc. So it would either be 2 or 4 gab ram?
No I hear you, always though that too. But since my smartphone, a Samsung Galaxy S6, has 3GB of RAM it seemed plausible to me. I've seen the odd number RAM stats/increase a few times lately. I hope if this Air 3 hub-bub has any chance of happening it will come with 4GB like the 12 inch Pro. 3GB going into 2017 would seem silly when like I said my albeit Android phone has 3GB and it was released in 2015.
Maybe, kinda makes sense. Not really interested in an iPad Air 3 now that we have iPad Pro models but some people might be.The iPad lineup it's becoming such a mess in the number of devices and the features given to each one.
APPLE still YEARS behind Samsung, and Microsoft as far as RAM is concerned. SHAME.
The reason it grabbed me was actually the LACK of Pencil and Keyboard support. If Apple would market the Air accordingly it could have the top tier Pro level at one price point, the Air at one and the mini at its own price.
I don't need Pencil support, even if devs start to support it as a cool stylus or use it in new imaginative ways I don't really see myself using it. If I can get a straight iPad like my Air2 now but with more CPU & RAM power that's the attraction.
i guess it's hard to compare,i've read often enough that iDevices outperformed other companies hardware that had way better specs and (much)more ram.And Microsoft...you obviously need a LOT of ram to run a full blown win10 on it
But i agree nonetheless, more ram for musicians please...i remember what a huge difference it was to switch from 1 to 2 GB and since then i can work quite relaxed.Never had any"low memory"warnings from auria anymore.
To be fair Apple wouldn't be innovating at all if they release the iPad model you are describing. An iPad like that would be nice of course and I do think it will come eventually. It's a powerful iPad at a fair price but not innovating anything.
Let's hope no pencil support means there implementing 3D Touch. If so I might just be buying a new iPad this year after all
If true, I'm not sure I understand Apples line up ideals. Before the 9.7 Pro came out, I thought them having an Air and Pro line seemed to make sense. These rumours suggest a right mish-mash of features and spec between the two ranges.
O well, the government taking away any income I have while being ill, means no new tech for the foreseeable future anyway, so back to my Air 2
Please elaborate on how "everybody" knows Apple devices are overpriced. Do you have any insight in actual production costs and development costs? If so, I would like to hear about it, because I, for one, don't think so, but I also don't know about the costs that accumulated over years of developing "new" devices. I wouldn't even know about any device, really. Just curious...
Ok, only maybe not USB I bet more on something new at least USB-C. A regular USB port would be weird, would be like going backwards instead of going forward, I just don't see it happening.
I think Apple Watch sales are a relative failure, compared to iPhone or ipad sales of course the watch numbers are a failure but compared to the rest of the wereables it's a big success, it sell more than most of them at a higher price. I don't like it but in my opinion it's not a failure.
The iPhone sales have fallen for the first time in 13 years but iPhone sales couldn't keep growing forever that's impossible, maybe if the iPhone 7 fails big but still Apple position is secure at least until we move from mobile to Something else. People talk a lot on tech sites about the surface pro and all its power but it still doesn't sell big numbers, most people don't care or need something like it or a theoretical super powerful iPad. If I wasn't a musician I now I wouldn't as my other needs regarding a computer or a mobile device are not pro at all in fact my iPad Air 2 would be enough and the iPad pro its perfect as it is for my non music needs.
Even if production cost is so high that a company makes only 1% profit it doesn't matter.
If the specs can be compared with other products that have an average 30% lower price then it is considered overpriced for common people.
Sony had to sell the first PS3 fat models so low that had a loss ,not profit, for every single unit. Still people used to say that PS3 is overpriced .
Price aside. I personally don't think that the iPad has the premium brand feel it used to have. Apple makes quality products, but the tech seems squeezed out so steadily and not quite in the way I would think a premium product should have.
That's my opinion though and no doubt not the same for everyone, so I'm not going to get into any silly bickering about it with anyone.
For me, the upgraded CPU would be more of a deal-maker / breaker than the RAM. I could be showing my ignorance here, but I wonder what real world difference an extra1 or 2GB of RAM would really make over the Air 2's 2GB ?
Personally, I use an ipad as it is the best portable option for me and the iOS music apps are miles better than Android's were (when I last used an Android device), I have no brand loyalty to Apple and no real interest in them or their history of innovation or otherwise, I'd use something else if there was anything better out there.
When I used to check CPU/ram usage while using my 4 and air 1 under load I'd always find CPU usage under 60% while RAM over 95% which definitely makes me more of a RAM fan.
