Synth apps that have no equivalent in the VST world?

I have a $50 itunes gift card burning a hole in my pocket, and I want to put it towards some synth / audio apps that have no equivalent in the software world. I already use Ableton Suite, Komplete 9, and Reason, so I already have a plethora of virtual analog and FM synths, samplers, etc.

What are some iPad synths that are really unique and/or have no equivalent in software VST form? Right now I'm looking at GeoShred and Animoog, but I would be curious to see what other synth apps are out there that are really unique to the iPad.

Comments

  • those two, plus mitosynth is pretty unique

    and also shoom and mersenne

  • Bebot, of course. Lol, but seriously too.

Like any iOS synth, don't judge till you've plugged in real headphones or studio monitors. ;-)

  • I will second Animoog and Shoom for their uniqueness. Mitosynth as well, though I personally don't find it as fun to program.

The way, normal, everyday people listen to music. /s

It actually makes me sad that there is such a chasm. Most people will never hear music as it is intended.

I hope I didn't start a rehash of a rehash of a rehashed subject. I just wanted to point out that it starts becoming personal pleasure if you don't have hardware that can share the sounds you hear and make with other people who don't have that kind of equipment.

  • Samplr - I know you say you already have samplers, but this one is really good and unique.

SECTOR - A sample slicer, not really unique per se, but really really good.

iMS-20 - The sequencer and song mode make it stand apart from the VST version.

TC-11 - Touch control synth, with MIDI controller equivalent (listed below).

There are also some good MIDI controller apps: StepPolyArp, ChordPolyPad, Fugue Machine, Gestrument, TC-Data.

Almost forgot... Borderlands Granular - A granular sampler that is very much made for the iPad.

  • Wow, thanks everyone for all of the suggestions. I had never even heard of some of those before. That TC-11 looks particularly interesting...

TC-11 for sure. However you might consider getting TC-Data, as it has all the same gestures as TC-11 but can control your other synths and VSTs via midi.

    Very cool.

One of those apps that is almost worth the cost of an iPad itself.

  • The above, and I'd add SynthQ, TF7, zMors Modular, the 3 resonator synths from IceGear (Lorentz, Laplace, Mersenne), iVCS3, Soundscaper, Voice Synth, AnalogKit, iTuttle. Because I'm also using a tablet that runs Windows 10 (on which I have many of the great synths ported to - or from - iOS) I find this list is where I spend most of my iOS synthi time.

So its the 11 with no sound?

    I am so on that.

I love performer but know that lot of same sounds on the 11 my understanding

@1P18 inclusion of iMS-20 made me realize iPolysix fits on the list for the same reasons (song mode/sequencer, and also the online song sharing bit) then felt stupid for not remembering the latest no-VST-equivalent gem, Model 15.

Other on-second-thoughts include ZedSynth, SpringSound, and the one VirSyn that isn't a port, and is also an early and still formidable example of a synth that has tablet use at its root: onscreen filter and harmonics wave-drawing, gyro X and Y for mod sources, per key aftertouch for pitch bend and mod source

    impaktor!
    voice synth
    soundscaper

    Borderlands granular for sure!
    Not a synth but patterning

  • Animoog. To me it's the best combination of sophisticated, simple and visual.

I wish I had a better handle on Tc-11/data but there's a lot under the hood.

You mention Reason... I'm going to give a shout out to Thor. It's the same keyboard as Figure which is super popular and it allows you to use Thor in Ableton which is pretty cool to me.
