Deep MIDI question, any synth apps SEND their knob positions out to external midi controllers?
I was thinking how cool it would be to control something like Animoog, with one of those behringer BCR2000 encoder thingies, and have the led's around the encoders actually reflect where the knobs are in a patch, which led to a conundrum:
Do any deep midi people knew of any synth apps that can send a midi output to an external midi controller, to update, say, some encoders, or another ipad running Lemur or something, when you change a preset or turn a knob in the app? Usually on the midi controller, the communication is just one way, you have to turn a knob to have the software catch, and only then, does the midi controller's knob (or encoder) setting mean anything. If you turn the knob in the app, the midi controller is in the dark, and doesn't update.
Some hardware synths have a "request all controllers" sysex message they respond to, that makes them send all of the knob's CC values, something like that would work to update an external midi controller.
The Mackie HUI protocol does that, for DAWs, it updates the controller the same way the controller updates the software, they talk back and forth, to stay together. The midi controllers like the bcr, or another ipad running lemur or mididesigner or something, can receive regular cc messages to update their controls, but is anyone sending?

I'd also like to know this.
I think MidiDesigner Pro 'might'. You could trying going via that.
So, also, I'm pretty sure that with the midi out IAP, Animoog will send its midi CCs out.
Might be worth asking the wonderful @GeertBevin about this.
The problem might be an infinite loop type thing that causes glitches though. I seem to remember experiencing this until I turned Animoogs midi out off.
Thor may also send its midi CCs out? I know it sends its keyboard notes out.
Hey @Matt_Fletcher_2000, yes you're entirely correct, with the MIDI out IAP, Animoog will send out MIDI CC messages for every knob that has a mapping CC number. This is the same for our new Model 15 app that was released two weeks ago, except that it's directly available within the app without the need for an IAP.
Neat! Good MIDI implementation. Thanks for clearing that up, I'll try it out with a BCR2000. The sound quality is great with those apps, should make a fun hybrid synth with the encoder knobs.
By any chance, is there any facility to request the app's CC's, to update the knobs when you change presets? That would be amazing to see all of the encoders jump to their new setting when you change a patch. It could help with in depth sequencing too, when you automate a CC, you are always missing the initial setting, when you rewind and playback the midi, unless the initial state was sent.
Yes. All of this would be useful.
And thanks @GeertBevin . Is there a way to switch midi out OFF in Model 15? It's just I seem to remember midi out and in together sometimes causes weird glitches when controlling (recording?) from/to a DAW or app.
Yes of course, it's very granular!
Very cool. Thanks.
Very cool indeed. Wonderful work.
Just saw the Animoog 2.4 update sends out MIDI CC for mapped controls, on preset change. Excellent! That was the last piece of the puzzle, to make a MIDI controller with lighted encoders reflect the real state of the soft synth. Nice work @MoogMusicInc .
Just got a BCR - this is unexpected good news. I don't have these apps yet - do you midi-learn the parameters of a preset, then save the mapping to the app? Do all of the presets map the same in terms of parameters?
Glad you like this improvement. Please let us know how this works out for you!
Ahhhh that's GREAT !
Moog definitely rox for ever !
I tried this in Animoog with my BCR2000 - works GREAT!
In Animoog I set midi in and out to the BCR, using whatever midi channel the BCR is using. Note that midi out requires the $5 IAP. Then I put Animoog into auto learn and assigned all the cc´s. Then I saved the midi map in Animoog. Now, no matter if I change the cc on the BCR or in Animoog, The BCR lights always match the graphics on the animoog app.
Only downside I can see is I can't find a way to use my bluetooth nanoKEY to trigger the keyboard, but that's not to big of a problem. I imagine this setup for editing presets, not laying down a track... Hope this helps!
Oooooh. Very interesting news!
Questions:
how often does this update? If you twiddle on screen does it immediately update the hardware? Or do you have to send a program change message?
anyone know if this would work with the BeatStep? It has infinite controllers and allows you to set up the dials at 'incremental' rather than absolute.
Instantaneous
Don`t have BeatStep though, checked it out in the store - Does it even have MIDI?
Thanks. Have just bought a BCR...
BeatStep is a midi controller/sequencer, yes. It has continuous encoders that have an 'incremental' as well as 'absolute' setting. But I don't think this helps in this case.
Immediately
I can't comment on BeatStep...
Immediately
I can't comment on BeatStep...
What other apps besides Animoog support midi knob position out?
Model 15 - does it currently send knob state on patch load, or is that still coming soon?
Beatstep suck at that...
It can save the position on/off of the pads while changing presets, but it will keep the same latest position values for encoders while switching between presets...
Obviously a bcr2000 (around 15 years older controller) does that marvellously ...
Model 15 doesn't seem to be sending knob position to my Behringer Motör49 rotary encoders on patch change (or when the position changes on the iPad's screen), however it definitely is sending Midi Out to Logic. I'm guessing the encoders are the same as the ones on the BCR2000. Is anyone getting the LEDs to reflect the position on-screen. The only other app I've had success with is Scythe.
Any success with other apps? Just bought midifighter twister and testing visual feedback
A list of supported apps would be really cool!
