THE CURE Synth Sound iOS equivalent?
During their live shows, they typically go into these long, beautifully creepy and stunning synth soundscapes that are incredible. I don't know enough about synths to identify what they're using. I know they used Roland stuff for their Disintegration album, and I'm assuming they likely use a wide variety, but does anyone know what iOS synth pack might get the closest to their more darkly ethereal sweeping soundscape stuff?
It's Friday the 13th. A black cat just crossed my path.
I'm seeing THE mutha-effin' CURE tonight!
Shaping up to be quite an enchanting Friday for sure.

Watch the best synths ever series from Sonic State. The guy that did much of The Cure keyboard sounds is on it.
I wouldn't worry too much about what you use app wise, it's about making their particular sound from each era.
In the studio they often used different synths than live
I'll look for that thanks. Yes, I love all their studio work.. but the synth stuff they do live is significantly different. And to me, very impressive. In some ways, better than what the record IMO.
I was at art college with Pearl (Porl) Thomson, who was the year above me. I remember being in the darkroom, seeing photographic treatments that would become Cure album covers.
Yes they seem to let loose more live - you can really tell when they are fully in the moment!
Which covers?!
In my ignorance about synth stuff, I could be mistaken. Seems like maybe they're more running guitars through synth FX mostly? It's hard to tell in that big sweeping scape they craft live.
I remember seeing large prints hanging up drying, one version of which would become Faith.
One of the synth lines on Closedown from Disintegration sounds very much like a Solina, which is closely emulated by this one:
Alina String Ensemble by insideout ltd.

Oh! I have that one. And yes... had a refresh listen and it does sound very similar. thx!
Have fun tonight @skiphunt!
Btw a few other blokes here live in/near Austin!
Yes The Cure have used the Arp Solina a lot
Thanks! It'll be my 5th time seeing them I think. Definitely a fan!
Yes, I know there are several Austinites here. There was talk of a meetup at some point. Seems like the only thing any of us have in common is iOS sound stuff... could be very awkward at best. But, maybe some Texas bbq and margaritas at some point could go a long way in breaking the ice.
That's right BBQ brings everyone together! Erm, well, minus the vegetarians...yeah...
Whoa!!!! Are you serious? You mean Parched Art? Please share more.
I actually reached out to Parched Art years ago but couldn't get a hold of anyone
Sounds about normal. Not in the limelight, and that’s as it should be.
As I say, he was the year above me, and was often in the Product Design workshop as was I too. This is the sort of thing I got up to at Art College, the usual stuff I suppose, for early ’80s, in Sussex.
@u0421793
Some interesting photos there. Are you still involved with product design? I particularly liked the birch plywood box with the chunky hinge
I went to CSM in the early 90s and eventually worked with several consultancies.
The cure used a Roland JX-8P for a lot of their stuff (as seen in the "Orange" concert footage). The JX-8P was fantastic for strings and pads. Most quality synths can achieve a similar sound. Find a nice pad, set a slow attack and release, and you're set. Another possibility, if you want to get uber authentic, is to get soundfonts of the actual instrument and play them in the BS-16i app. If you have a desktop, you can download the fantastic PG-8X VSTi, for free and create your own patches and then use Polyphone to create a sound font with the samples. Supposedly, Sunrizer synth was modeled after a JP-8000 (somewhat) so you might check out the sound of that one. However, my personal secret weapon is to use Epic Synth with the built-in chorus turned off and an ensemble chorus effect after it. Epic synth was modeled after the Roland Juno 6. While it does a good job of giving a vintage vibe, it isn't a perfect emulation (thus why I recommend a different chorus). Try Emo Chorus after Epic Synth, and I think you'll be happy with the vintage sound. I hope this helps!

disintegration was a lot of production tec
lots of reverb & chorus, delay
warm wide and doomy
was one of the first records I bought when I was a teenager.
my mother always used to complain about the "funeral music" ^^
Wow! Great info and excellent links. I'm going to dig into this later... I tried finding the specifics myself and failed.
And, I didn't know that most of the artwork was done by one outfit either. Going to dig into that history too.
Guess I wasn't quite the uberfan I thought I was. Didn't know most of this stuff.
They were spectacular last night. Different every time I see them. The last 2 times it was like a much more over-the-top presentation with a bigger wall of sound. Last night it was still a grand lighting show, design, etc. but slightly more intimate... but not intimate as in smaller.. but less dark, more focused, more precise.
And, I'm embarrassed to say that I didn't recognize nearly half of what they played. There'd been rumors that 2 new songs would be premiered, but since I didn't recognize the more obscure stuff, I don't know which (if any) were new.
They played for 3hrs.
