Trust your ears

I know we all seek approval in life - if you say you don't, you are either lying to yourself or have more disturbing issues ;)

Yet most of us on here often search for approval of the sound of apps - does so and so app sound any good? Which is the best sounding so and so? So and so Vs so and so? Lol

Surely as 'musicians' or creaters of sound, we trust our ears? Or do we just need friendly reassurance that we are not alone in thinking so and so app sounds great?

Maybe we should have more belief in our own judgement - maybe we should just create what we think is great even if it only becomes popular after we are dead :p

Let's create from our own judgements and maybe in doing so we will stumble across the next BIG THING!

  • Very true. Of course, this is assuming you’re connecting your iPad to the mixer through gold cables, but if so, yes, carry on and trust your judgement.

  • The notion of what sounds "good" is largely nonsense. After all, the 303, 909 & 606 were all initial failures because they were poor at there intended purpose of emulating real instruments. People laugh off Casio's CZ-101 as cheap & crap, yet Vince Clarke squeezed many Erasure tunes out of a bunch of them. Yamaha's budget 4-op FM synths were seen as useless, but went on to become an integral part of the early Detroit techno sound. The Alesis Microverbs are extremely lo-do, yet sounded great in the hands of Autechre, Aphex Twin, Squarepusher, etc....

Of course, these are all hardware examples...but the same applies to apps...

  • The ego seeks approval not the soul. The only person who has to approve me for my own peace of mind is me. If anybody else dislikes or has a problem with me etc etc then it is there problem not mine! I've done the problematic mind a long time ago and it's overrated. Silence the mind and free yourself of the tortures of it. Meditation will set you free on that front brother. Oh yes I be very disturbed

  • Trust your ears... And keep a watchful eye on your nose, because that sumbitch is evil!

  • Very true - there have been synths that others have raved about - and have appeared in top singles - that I have disliked. If you follow your own path, you are more likely to find your own voice.

  • trusting myself sounds awful close to blasphemy and i am not willing to live in fear of lightning strikes.

Looks like your fully embracing that path already with Goats head as a profile pic

Not me. Do you think that's ok?

  • I approve.

  • I mostly come here for advice when I have issues but also keep an eye on app-talk as well. Sometimes I try or buy an app after I read about t on the forum. But then, whatever others have said about that app, i can only make my music with it. Back in the day when I was younger I wanted so much to sound like this or that artist. Then at some point I had to realize that I cannot and need not to be anyone else, just myself, good or bad. This is not to say I don't make music under influence because I obviously do. But the end result will be what I was able to compose. Sometimes I post my tracks here and usually get little or no feedback at all. Suprisingly, this only reinforces the "I do it my way" formula, so I keep rolling out the same kind of "less accessible" music. I trust my ears, and my ears feed from inside of me, so to speak. Sorry to bore you with my philosophy, but I'm under a....different kind of influence right now and that put me in "posting mode". :)
