Best stereo sample editor app?

What is the best stereo sample editor app? AudioShare is a great librarian but I need something that can zoom in to the wave, snap to zero crossings. Bonus points if it can calculate BPM, detect transients, auto chop, or time stretch. Something like a blend between SoundForge and Recycle if that isn't too dated of a reference. Getting files in and out is also important.

Immediate need is to chop sections out of longer samples to bring into Samplr or Blocs Wave.

  • My friend swears by Twisted Wave editor. Saw it in action and he was able to zoom in the wave deep to edit. Was impressed big time.

  • Twisted Wave yes

  • Twisted Wave is a good audio editor but does none of the chopping or bpm detection you want. I went with iMPC Pro for this. Check out this recent thread.

  • Twisted Wave or even better, the Wave Editor in Caustic 3.2 which should be out soon. (I hope)

That doesn't exist yet. Think twisted wave and beatmaker2 and AudioShare is probably the best way to cobble it together.

And/or Auria if you already own in.

  • By the way, an editor like this is on @j_liljedahl's todo list. Let us hope it rises to the top sooner than later.

Yes. And put it inside AUM.

Or just connect it fluidly like he's done with AS with a single shares kymatica file system.

  • I use twisted wave on a weekly basis to edit and upload our church sermons. It works like a charm.

Agreed, but I would still like to be able to simply paste directly into AUM. I know JL teased that 'then why would people need AS', but I know that he must surely know that they do, and we do :)

  • transient detection.... small list.

  • I use the Caustic editor provided in the Volca Sample uploader. Terrific value (free!)

I think putting it in AS would be the right place. Putting it in AUM would start to feel like a DAW, and I think @j_liljedahl was trying to avoid that. Several DAWs already have good sample editors, but the fact that this is missing from AS is what set me off on this quest to begin with.

  • Just playing around with TwistedWave, you can set markers at specific points and then the selection will snap to the markers. You can also tap on the marker name and the play head will jump to that marker.

You can then easily export the selected area to a number of different places to include open in and the document picker.

    Just downloaded. This looks good.

It should be said that while there are other ways around it maybe, whenever I need to do something, right now, with a sample, I open Twisted Wave and 90% of the time I can get done what I need to in the quickest and easiest, most accurate way. It is one of my 'what I'd do different' lessons. I held off from buying TW because of the cost, but as a practical tool I have got my money's worth many times over subsequently...

  • @JohnnyGoodyear I would agree. It meets almost all of my editing needs.

I did just email the developer about a couple of feature requests. I asked if he could make the markers movable once they have been placed. Also if he could somehow make it where you could export the individual chops as laid out by the markers all at once. Be able to bring in an audio file, put markers at certain points, and then export all the chops at once would be really useful.

He responded a couple years ago super quick when I asked about adding FLAC support. It was just a matter of a few hours and he already had it implemented, ready for the next update.

Excellent suggestions and good for you for getting on the stick.

  • Still hoping that one day in the future TwistedWave will get an option to disable 'zero-snap' for true sample-accurate editing...

  • You can't move markers in twisted wave? (don't own it)

  • does twisted wave have transient detection?

  • @syrupcore Not at the moment. It is really easy to add new ones and delete the old ones. I have contacted the developer and he is looking into this request

@kobamoto Not thatI am aware of. Might be able to request it, he is a very involved developer.

@Samu I have requested that he add an option to disable the zero crossing snapping for more accurate editing.

    Thanks!

Last time I asked for it, Thomas(the developer) just said that not many have asked for it and that he would consider it if more people asked for it. I also have the desktop version of TwistedWave and hopefully more feature will find their way to iOS version (Like viewing length in samples in addition to time).

I'm happy he decided to quite promptly add FilePicker support after I asked for it :)

I think that Auria Pro would fulfill all the features that the OP wanted (more knowledgeable AP folks may know better ?)

Looks like the 'Audioshare editor' isn't going to happen this year and the TW developer doesn't appear to be in a rush either (regarding the zero crossing thing) :)

  • I'm nowadays doing most of my recording/sampling/editing using Cubasis. (Just remember to set the location indicator to time instead of bars/beats for sample-accurate editing).

  • I realise I'm late to this party, but wanted to chime in anyway, hi. :)

On iOS TwistedWave is my go-to for practically every single-track audio edit I do, I'm a big fan, I mean B-I-G--F-A-N, wheeeee. :)

Another reason I wanted to chime is is the zero-crossing snapping thing --

In SoundTrack Pro on desktop, even when I carefully matched both sides if the waveform, my non-zero-crossing cuts nearly always generated crackles and pops, which then took me one or more steps to fix.

Zero-snaps have totally eradicated those artefacts, and made my whole cutting process much quicker and easier, and TW can still zoom me in plenty deep enough to allow every bit as much precision as I need.

So I'm a big fan of zero-crossing-snaps, and my interest in disabling them is zero, heh.

Just thought I'd mention what happens to me without that feature, maybe a better idea is to just keep it, you know?

    Ok, late-chime-in done now. :)

This. Mostly, when you have Auria Pro, you may find yourself wanting to use a different app, but without really needing it. Give Lyra the ability to create and edit its sample libraries, and "mostly" will turn to "always"

Me too. Whenever I need (right now!) to do something in this area (some samples this morning, yesterday 45 minutes of webinar vox that needed paring down) I've learned to just open TW first....
