  • My money has been on Auria. Once they integrate Audiobus and Midi, Auria will be the closest thing on iPad to desktop DAW. The Auria updates seem to be coming faster too and the devs actually listen to their customers.
Steinberg's track record in the past hasn't exactly been first class, their software has gotten so bloated, buggy and obtrusive that I switched to Studio One when it came out, which just works.
Auria just seems to be a no-nonsense straight forward recording app with high quality plugins. What more can you ask for?

  • @AH_MediaDesigns Well... I personally would like a cheaper price. So that's what I would ask for. With the in-app purchases it's the most costly musicians app by far, that I've seen. It's an iPad not a recording studio for Murphy's sake. lol I've paid way more money for software for PC, but it's a PC, it's not all super limited like an iPad is. Don't get me wrong, it looks excellent for an iPad but I just can't justify paying that much cash for something that will fail in comparison to almost any DAW on a 5 year old laptop.

P.S.- I apologize to anyone named Murphy who's feelings were hurt when I used their name as a swear word. ;-)

  • I hear you Ryan, Auria sure looks pretty though and I can't stop having a peek every now and then;)

Cubasis is like Auria's ugly friend that would probably be a good companion but then every time I see Auria I would be tempted to cheat on Cubasis.

    If you follow...

    Ahh...the paradox of choice.

  • I do agree that Auria can get very expensive very fast, but I like the option of customizing Auria just the way I like it. Personally, I don't have much interest in filter plugins, but the compressors, EQs and Reverbs are top priority.
I'm actually very surprised that Cubasis hasn't adopted in-app purchases right from the start. Maybe that'll come later and I can just imagine that it'll be all Steinberg/Yamaha products.
Either way, I respect Cubasis for what it is, and certain things about it are nicely implemented, but Auria still plays in a completely different league. Even without Midi yet.

  • Steinberg already confirmed (forum)that they think they gonna integrate IAP's in Cubasis.Makes sense of course. My guess is:you will see steinberg only plugins for a long time cause only in this case they can make real cash with IAP's.The developers from auria don't see a penny for IAP's for example.

Then you could probably spend a lot of extra money to upgrade the crappy effects in Cubasis (i don't think they will be any cheaper than the Fx in auria but auria comes with better FX from scratch) .Of course this are just speculations but hey,it's Steinberg ;)

I'll stick with auria. They have one of the best customer support i've ever seen. And i love the 3rd party plugin selection.Btw,the plugins are still MUCH cheaper then the PC versions and theres no need to buy them all...

  • True enough. All good points. I wish either cubasis or Auria would support iPhone, that would probably push me a lot more to get one of them, well, that and if I had a couple hundred bucks to throw away on stuff i didn't need. For now though I am very happy to use my iPad and iPhone as an instrument/effects system and record serious stuff on PC and goofing around on the go stuff with MT DAW or one of the others. It's all affordable and that's the great thing about making music on ios, you can get a serious start for under $50. I mean honestly, Audiobus could've been $100 and I would've shelled out the cash without question.. but there is no alternative to it. Cubasis and Auria, as sexy as either might be, I have alternatives.

  • funny thing is:i bought two ipad 2 a couple of months ago (along with two midi interfaces)to do it exactly like you do.Using them mainly as additional instruments/midi controller to combine with my macbook.Well,it turned out that i'm using the computer less then ever before now and the second ipad is just collecting dust :) And Audiobus changed my mind as well. Finally i got an ipad 4 now and gonna sell the other ipads very soon :)

  • Nice @crabman . You should sell one and do something fun with the other like donate it or hold a contest of some sort. Might as well. Unless u need the cash. :-)

  • Unfortunately,i need the cash :)

  • I like Cubasis a lot but my main complaints are...1) the soft synth sounds are pretty weak and not very good 2) there is no tempo sync that I'm aware of so far. 3) there are no presets on the effects. I love the concept but they really gotta sync the tempo and get it to preview like that and the midi functionality is useless to me if the soft synth sounds stay pretty anaemic.
