Fantasy Interface

This shouldn't be that hard, should it?
I have an Akai MPK Mini2. (Requires a powered hub for iPad.)
I am a bass player.

Is there a device that can corral a bass/guitar AND the MPK Mini and send it via Lightning cable into my iPad Air 2?
A 20-minute live chat with Guitar Center was a "Spinal Tap"-worthy session of illogic. The chat dude told me I needed a midi interface. ORLY. And a mixer, "probably."

PS: This thing (a Digidesign MBox Mini2) is worthless, right?

I have a similar issue at the moment, I want to take audio from a Bass and a Guitar and a stereo signal from a groove box. As well as Midi from several controllers.

First thing you need is a multi input audio device that is either USB or Lightning and has enough audio inputs for all your devices. iOS will only recognise a single audio interface so you cannot plug multiple ones in.

Then if your audio interface is a USB one, you may or may not, depending on your interface, need a powered USB hub, you need that anyway for your MPK Mini 2. Does your MPK have audio outputs ? if it uses USB for audio you will not be able to add more inputs for the bass/guitar.

You then need the USB to Lightning Camera Connection kit.

There are lots of interfaces around that will do this, I have yet to start my search, but they are not cheap for 4 inputs, which is what I need minimum.
Just Google iOS USB Audio Interface 4 input

  • Also, the Alesis iO4 is a cheap way to get 4 signals in. Has DIN MIDI on board but will not act as a USB MIDI host so you'll need to plug the iO4 and your USB MIDI devices into a hub first.

    iconnect audio 4+
Does midi, 4 inputs and charges your iPad while you use it. Not cheap though! But very good and supports usb hubs.
This will also power your midi keyboard without powered hub.

  • Thanks! I don't suppose the iO2 would work? And I'll still need a powered USB hub, correct?
The iO4 and iO2 seem to have identical rear ports:

Maybe the most cost effective solution is just to use the Line6 USB adapter I already have for bass, and then unplug that and swap in the MPK through a powered hub (and camera connection kit) and into the iPad.

Seems like a lot of ductwork to attach to such an elegant device!

What Line6 USB adapter particularly? There's a good chance that you can plug the Line 6 and your MPK into a powered hub, and then attach the hub via the camera connection kit (get the one that also charges) to the iPad. You can only use one USB audio device at a time, but you can have multiple MIDI devices on the hub with the audio device at the same time.

  • Line 6 Sonic Port.
So I can send both this and the MPK into a powered USB hub, and then the hub into the ipad. And once in the iPad, I can choose from between the two devices? That's a great solution!

Can anybody recommend a powered USB hub? :)

  • Wait a sec.
Does that have a USB out, or just direct connect to the iPad/iPhone? If it doesn't have USB out then that plan won't work.

  • does have a usb out.
the cheaper ones go into the 1/8" stereo mini.

  • You should probably be good to go then. And you don't have to "choose" between the two devices. They'll both work at the same time.

Any cheap-shit powered hub should work. In fact, if you get the Apple USB 3 camera adapter, you may not need a powered hub at all as the iPad should be able to supply it. It's possible that won't supply enough power for both devices, but it's worth a try. You might want to buy a cheap powered hub and just not use the power supply unless you need it.

The only big caveat ... powering the CCK in my house introduces terrible AC noise to the audio input. I have to resort to using a battery power supply. Your results may vary.

There are other more robust powered hub options you can choose, but only if you really need the extra features such as being able to charge other devices and USB 3.0 speed. I bought one of these for the geek factor - but definitely not needed.

  • Does the iconnect have a preamp for guitar or are they all line inputs?

  • IIRC they're all line inputs.

I'm drawn to this little doodad.

Just keep in mind that you still need the powered CCK adapter. You can't just hook up to this and have your iOS device charge through the USB connection while at the same time using it for data. I originally thought that was the case, but it will not work for charging the iPad. You have to connect a cable from the CCK to the hub's input port and a usb-lightning cable to either an external power supply or to the charging port.

Yes, it looks like you could do data and charging through the one connection, but you can't. Also, you can't just hook the ipad up to any port. It has to be the uplink (mini usb) port.

  • I charge the iPad obsessively anyway, so I'm not worried about that.

  • Then you don't really need the powered CCK, but if you don't already have a CCK then I highly recommend getting the powered one.
