Favorite genres

I followed the Rap link and wanted to steer clear of it because of the racial divide that seemed to crop up. I never want to go down that path. All of us have our biases, but when it comes to music, I've seen the uglier side of people can be almost forgotten. I wanted to start a thread that gives everyone a chance to talk about the music that drives you the most. For me, it's prog rock. And to me that means rock infused with anything. Rock, by itself, doesn't fill the void, but fused with the myriad other styles, it just astounds me. In fact, fusion is probably the genre I enjoy the most, but by its nature is almost defiant of catagorization. I play regularly with some guys who play Jazz, Reggae, Rock, Folk, Prog, R&B, Blues, etc., and I love the influences all of it can have, much of which, I would never have expected. Reggae/Blues/Rock is incredibly fun! But back to faves....here's one of mine....whatever you might label it as....

Now, how do I play that on an iPad??

  • That gives a good idea of what I'm into now (because, at least for me, musical preferences are not set in stone):

  • I don't know that I have a favorite genre, I think there are a handful of artists in every genre that are really outstanding. I suppose if I had to settle on a genre it would have to be new wave. That being said I think I actively dislike the majority of music I hear. I particularly dislike most variants of rock and country music. Rap and hip hop are hit and miss. I can occasionally enjoy some prog rock, definitely like Pink Floyd. I like punk when it's actually punk, meaning music made by people who don't give a fuck what anyone thinks of their music, as opposed to some middle class white kids trying to emulate the Sex Pistols or The Ramones, or whatever they think punk is "supposed" to sound like, which is the least punk thing in existence.

  • Prog rock has to be my fav genre as well, but I listen to a range of styles including classical and jazz through to heavy rock. I love the way music brings people together.

  • I like a lot of stuff: 50s Country, Classic Rock, Blues, Rocksteady, etc... but my favorite stuff is music from about 1977-1986: Punk, HxC, PostPunk, Synth Pop and Electro. I also have a special fondness of 1990-1995 stuff like Jesus Lizard, Cows, Didjits, Helios Creed, Supersuckers, Mudhoney, etc...

  • Great topic. I don't think I have a particular genre that drives me the most. I enjoy most genres of music. Growing up, I always loved listening to music. I was a country only kid for a while but then progressed into some classic rock. I moved towns and discovered alternative rock and loved it. My top bands were Led Zeppelin, Dave Matthews, Tool, Primus, and Pink Floyd. When I didn't know what I wanted to listen to, any of those would satisfy my musical craving.

Somehow in my older age (33 is not old but its older than I once was) I have developed a taste for Electronica/EMD and would really like to incorporate it into some worship music. I try to listen to christian music but there is something that fall short for me and always leaves me wanting more.

I have a vision of sound that merges the styles of my top bands with an acoustic and blends in some electronic. Almost in its own genre, maybe titled Hard Acoustic Folktronica.

  • I like some guitar music, some classical music and some lofi wonky beats

  • Hadn't thought of lo-fi wonky beats as a genre but I'm signing up right here...

  • Well, I'm not not sure what the official name for that genre is but it is my favourite.

  • I just about have an equal number of albums from most of these genres but my collection is prog/jazz heavy:
prog, jazz, fusion, soul, funk, industrial, new wave, psychedelic, krautrock, English folk, metal

  • I don't have a favorite genre these days. I haven't had a favorite color since I was like 7 – and I still don't know what I want to be when I grow up.

I am drawn to emotional music, with melody, intensity and sincerity. I think. Heart on sleeve with sound song structure.

  • CCM, Gospel, Rock, Jazz, and some Pop.

  • Art thug, blues, jazz, proto-punk, kosmiche musik
