Shit hurts

Just lost my cat today...probably a heart attack. I never had much of an affinity for cats, but this one was different. He was probably more loyal than most dogs. A beautiful animal in every sense. It was hard to see him pass before my eyes. I'm just posting here because there are so many of you that I've grown close to. Please welcome my buddy "Blaze" to the mix of all that we create.

  • I'm so very sorry for your loss. Our animals are like our children. My sincere condolences. :(

Sorry to hear that. Can I recommend you start a tradition in his honor? When my girlfriend's cat died, we took her to an animal shelter to dispose of the body (we were young and didn't know what to do). The place was way uptown in New York City so we went to the Bronx and went to a Yankees game for the first time. Sat in the bleachers in honor of Molly. Strangely peaceful.

you just described my now long gone "Baylor". wonderful loyal companions.

    sorry for your loss...

  • So sorry about Blaze. They are beautiful animals. All of them. They were here first

Good suggestion Ex, doing something in his honour every year. They give so much.
Life is better with a pet.

  • My thoughts are of you and everyone who knew and loved Blaze.
I'm so sorry for your loss.

  • Sorry to hear that FJ. It is one of the great imbalances that, for the most part, we outlive our furred friends and know it from the getgo, but no easier does it make it. Some folks consider domesticated animals as somehow secondary, but they love more and demonstrate far greater intrinsic loyalty (without judgment) than any human being I've ever known (self included). Hang in there Mister.

  • Rest in peace Blaze. I'm sorry for your loss @funjunkie27. They really are little blessings.

  • You cat sounds like you loved it and gave it a better life than ANYONE ELSE COULD HAVE!

Congrats for giving an animal a peaceful and loving life and home.

  • Thanks to everyone.., we plan on a memorial every Memorial Day...and keep Baylor, and all others in mind as well. They are the innocents, and beautiful creatures. It strikes me that so many of you appreciate this. I'm not particularly religious, but God bless all of you!

Not specifically about cats, and not specifically about pets passing, but it is about pets and our bonds:

In whose language do we speak

I sing songs to my dog using just her name,
and ask her things in a language she’ll never utter.
    We commune in code:
    Furtive looks, longing glances,
    Sharp barks, and whimpered yelps,
Gestures of flanges, and tilted skulls.
In whose language do we speak,
    This speciated Babylon?

How could I deny her mind, or feelings
and flow of thought when she never questions mine.
She remembers the sound of my ambling,
and the smell of friends and ex-lovers
long since passed in sensory technicolor
    far more vivid than I.

So if I command, and my verb isn’t hers
how could she acquiesce to sit,
to roll over, to beg? Her wild isn’t bred out.
Fur and fang, beat a naked ape man.
Why give me the tongue and not the tooth?
Certainly not for a scratch behind an ear,
    or food on my plate.

My singing, as Orphean as it may be,
    is only of passing note.
Perhaps, because we breathe the same divinity,
and hers is the grace to give credence to mine.

no words can suffice, I hope you took many pics and video so that you can celebrate those wonderful memories, you made each others lives richer it doesn't get much better than that

  • Sorry for your news ! Remember with a smile, and your heart will heal.

  • You guys are wonderful. Thanks so much!

  • Pets can teach us so much in life without saying a word. Sorry for your loss.
    moment of silence for Blaze

  • We just lost our cat Freya of 16-years last month. She had lived and traveled with us through 3 countries and 3 continents in over 13 different houses/apartments. Sorry to hear about Blaze.

  • Animals are lucky - they get to know us their entire lives. We have to say goodbye at some point. Sorry to hear this dude! Get back on the cat hype when you're ready - it's just not the same without one.

  • I like most animals I've met more than most folk I've met. No fault of the many fine people I've come to know. I'm very sorry to hear of your loss. In these bleak, dark moments, we truly must fight the good fight – the inner struggle – alone. We persevere not just for ourselves, but for the dearly departed, who wish us relief from the pain of loss. We honor them with each victory. Soldier on.

Sorry to hear of your loss also @Telengard .

I agree @eustressor that I generally like animals more than people....present company excluded of course!

Not sure I'll be getting another pet any time soon....maybe once the kids leave (they're over due  )

Apologies for this non-music related thread, but the comments have been helpful for me. Thanks again!

  • That's the same that we did for Blaze @Nathan. He's in our flower bed in the back yard.....one of his favorite spots.

    And yeah...Blaze was a looker!

  • I'll buy you a drink at South City Kitchen.

  • Russ I really do send my best wishes and hope you know that along with this being a community of musician/producers we're also all artistic types and softies who feel and have an advanced sense of empathy...those traits usually are also found in pet owners. My wife and I have it bigtime.

They're part of the family, as real as that can be. We lost our Ragdoll cat Mini (short for Minuet) last December and it still hurts, but it does gets better. Be cool...

  • I can tell its going to take some time @JRSIV. Too many reminders around the house. I'm sure our grandson is going to be looking for Blaze when he comes over, so that will be painful as well.

I've never been there @johnfromberkeley, so looking forward to it!

  • Things take time. Take it easy. It took me weeks not to cry when I was looking into the empty space where the food dishes from my cat used to stand.

  • I lost a cat last year ( think he may have been poisoned ) , though his sisters still with us . Took months to get used to the empty spot in the kitchen where he used to sit :((

Sorry to hear about Blaze. Our cat, Xena Warrior Princess, departed earlier this year, after twenty one years. Good cat. Super smart. We added another cat about two years ago; Joxer the Mighty is a really nice cat too, but about as dumb as a box of rocks. And you'll never guess what my wife's favorite TV show was when we got our first cat.
